Enhancements:

1 Photoshop 4 Compatibility: The FreeHand 7.0.2 Updater Updates drag and drop, copy, paste, Illustrator file export, RGB only PostScript file export resulting in better color consistency between the programs.
2 Flash Image Export: FreeHand 7.0.2 exports Flash SWF for browsers and Flash 2 import with perfect color fidelity. URL linking will remain intact if the exported file is not opened in the Flash editor.
3 GIF89a Import/Export FreeHand 7.0.2 optimizes the size of GIF89a images on export by color reduction, support for dither on/off options, transparency, interlacing, and Web-safe palettes. The new GIF89a filter is also supported by Insta.HTML and is scriptable.
4 PDF import/Export FreeHand 7.0.2 improves handling of text blocks in imported PDF files. Layer information is retained in PDF files created in FreeHand or Illustrator. Files with tiled fills now export to PDF faster and result in smaller PDF files.

FreeHand does not support the Acrobat 3.0 format containing compression. Before importing into FreeHand, PDFs created with Acrobat Distiller 3.0 should either be created in Acrobat 2.1 format or created in Acrobat 3.0 format with all compression options unchecked. FreeHand 7.0 does not support PDF version 1.2. A distinction should be maintained between Acrobat Distiller versions and PDF format versions. They are not the same.

Improvements:

Steps to reproduce the error:In FreeHand 7.0Workaround:2
1 Deleted Printer Drivers (Win95). Under specific circumstances in Windows 95, FreeHand 7 caused the printer driver to be uninstalled after printing. This problem is corrected.
2 Copy and Paste Text. When text pasted into a FreeHand document was edited, the edits were incorrectly applied to the Clipboard copy of the text. This problem is fixed.
Documents that already exhibit this behavior will not be cleaned up. This would require, at minimum, a time-consuming check when all files are opened. If text blocks exhibit this behavior, they can be fixed with a simple cut and paste. This will break the Quasi-Master/slave relationship and make the text blocks act normally.
1 Create a text block with the word "Sam"
  2 Copy it.
  3 Paste it.
4 Change the text to "John"
5 Paste it. (It will paste as "John" instead of "Sam")
6 Change this text block to "Anna"
7 Paste it. (It will paste "Anna" instead of "Sam" or "John")
After forcing a screen redraw with Cmd/Ctrl-k, you should now have 1 text block that says "Sam" and two that say "Anna"
8 Save the file and quit FreeHand 7.0.
9 Launch FreeHand 7.0.2.
10 Open the file.
11 Change the last text block (the second "Anna") to "Monte."
After forcing a screen redraw with Cmd/Ctrl-k, you should now have 1 text block that says "Sam" and two that say "Monte"
12 Select the text blocks.
13 Cut.
14 Paste. They will no longer be linked.
3 Duplicate Spot Colors. A problem with printing duplicate spot color plates is fixed. A related problem with copying and pasting spot colors with tints to a new FreeHand document is corrected. Documents that already exhibit this behavior will not be cleaned up. To fix the problem in existing documents, copy and paste the contents of the document to the same document or to a new document.
4 Selecting Behind Objects in a Group Sub-selecting one object behind another object within a group or within a paste inside, using the right mouse button while pressing the Control-Alt keys (Control-Option on the Mac), now works properly.
5 Resource Leak (Win95 only). A system memory problem occurred when the combined use of the Text Toolbar, 24-bit color display properties, and a high-color desktop scheme resulted in uncompleted commands, errors, and sometimes a crash. This problem is fixed.
6 Bitmap Export Problems. Exporting bitmaps such as BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, or Targa at certain resolutions caused banding or multi-colored lines in the resulting image. This problem is corrected.
A failed export did not allow the FreeHand document to be saved in the same folder. This problem is fixed.
Memory usage is slightly improved when rasterizing the image. Expect the formula's specified in TN 3673 on memory requirements when exporting bitmaps to strictly apply.
7 HP Printers Print an Extra Page FreeHand timed out after concluding the print job on certain Hewlett-Packard printers. A PostScript error was generated that caused an extra page to print out five minutes later. This problem is fixed.
8 Second Launch Problems (Win95 & NT). With FreeHand running, a new file could not be opened either by double-clicking it or dragging it to a FreeHand shortcut on the desktop. This problem is corrected for Win95/NT 4.0.
9 PANTONE ProSim on Canon Printers with Fiery Level 2 RIP (Mac) PANTONE ProSim colors now print correctly on Canon printers using a Fiery level 2 raster image processor.
10 EPS files Containing Overprinting Gradients Placed in Quark or PageMaker Gradients in EPS files overprint correctly when printed from QuarkXPress or Adobe PageMaker. Spot to Spot gradients are, by default set to overprint, though the fill and stroke inspectors do not indicate this.
11 Blends Containing Objects that are Pasted Inside FreeHand 4/5/5.5 files containing blends with contents pasted inside are now correctly saved in FreeHand 7.
12 Displaying and Printing LRG files with Units of Dots Per Centimeter Displaying and printing LRG images with dots per centimeter units has been corrected.
13 RGB Colors Convert Correctly to CMYK RGB colors now convert correctly to CMYK when Color Management is turned off.

Updater Issues:

1 "Resource has been modified..." (Mac) Example: The Check for Missing Links preference creates a new resource called "alis" in the FreeHand application with the path to check for missing links. When the FreeHand 7.0.2 updater is run, it checks the FreeHand 7 resources and sees the new resource, then it fails with a message saying: "Resource has been modified (alis 4242)" To fix any "Resource has been modified" errors, reinstall FreeHand 7 and then run the updater.

ANY time that a "resource has been modified" error occurs, the solution is to reinstall FreeHand and run the updater again.

2 Multiple Copies of FreeHand. If someone has multiple copies of FreeHand 7 installed, and the updater automatically locates the wrong version for updating, the user must use the Select Folder option in the installer screen to select the actual FreeHand 7 folder, as opposed to just switching hard drive destinations.
3 Xtra Cache: FH7.MCH. Under some circumstances, the Windows GIF Export and/or the PDF export will not function correctly when FreeHand 7 is updated to FreeHand 7.0.2. If this occurs, delete the file "fh7.mch" from the FreeHand 7 directory. Restart FreeHand 7.0.2 and the GIF Export will now function correctly.
4 "Patch Error: The old file doesn't exist." The update must be in the fh7.exe's directory or it will try to update and announce, "Patch Error: The old file doesn't exist."
