Error: 'Unable to create an instance of required object: fileproxy'

Issue

After uninstalling Macromedia Homesite, Windows Explorer presents the error "Unable to create an instance of required object: fileproxy" when it is started.

Reason

This issue occurs if DLL files that are installed with HomeSite are not entirely removed from your system after uninstalling HomeSite.

Solution

  1. Open the System folder (C:\windows\system32) and look for the following DLLs:
    • cfvalidator.dll
    • CFSourceControl.ocx
    • CfShellFtpRds.dll
    • CFFileProxy.dll
    • CFFtp.dll
    • CFRegExp.dll
    • cfssvradmin.dll
    • wddx_com.dll,
    • xmlparse.dll
    • xmltok.dll
    • cfmsg.dll
    • cfrds.dll
    • CFSDebug.dll.
Ordinarily, if all Macromedia HomeSite/Studio installations have been entirely uninstalled, these files will not be there. However, if some or all of them are there (whether or not other HomeSite/Studio installations exist), unregister and delete them.
  2. To unregister them, open the command window (Start > Run> CMD) and use the following commands:

    regsvr32.exe /u CfShellFtpRds.dll
    regsvr32.exe /u CFFileProxy.dll
    regsvr32.exe /u cfssvradmin.dll
    regsvr32.exe /u cfvalidator.dll
    regsvr32.exe /u CFSourceControl.ocx
    regsvr32.exe /u CFRegExp.dll
    regsvr32.exe /u wddx_com.dll
    regsvr32.exe /u cfrds.dll
    regsvr32.exe /u CFFtp.dll
    regsvr32.exe /u circ3.ocx
    regsvr32.exe /u CFSDebug.dll
