Problems running Flash Player 8.0.24.0 ActiveX control after installation when logged in as Restricted User on Windows

Issue

After successful installation under the Windows Administrator account, Restricted User accounts are unable to display Flash Player content.

This issue has been reported on Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 systems and occurs sporadically. It may also effect other versions of Windows, such as Windows 2000.

Solution

Users who installed Flash Player 8.0.24.0 prior to April 6, 2006 must uninstall using the Flash Player uninstaller released on May 11, 2006, then reinstall as follows:

  1. Uninstall Flash Player using the instructions in How to uninstall the Macromedia Flash Player (TechNote tn_14157).

Note: If you have a Flash Player uninstaller downloaded prior to May 11, 2006 on your desktop, download the latest version.
  2. Install the latest Flash Player from the Flash Player Download Center.

Additional Information

Warning: As of May 10, 2006, the following alternative manual solution is obsolete. It is provided here for historical purposes only. If uninstalling and reinstalling Flash Player 8.0.24.0 fails, contact support via the Flash Player Support Center.

The following solution involves the Windows System Registry. Editing or manipulating the registry incorrectly can result in serious system damage which may require reinstallation of the operating system. If you are not comfortable editing the registry, then it's best to take your machine to a professional. If you choose to proceed, it is essential to create a complete system backup and a Windows System Restore Point before proceeding. Adobe Systems cannot be held responsible for damage resulting from this information.

For each of the following registry keys for Flash Player:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{D27CDB6B-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000}

  1. Right-click the key, select "Permissions"
  2. In the Permissions Dialog click the "Advanced" button
  3. Click "Add"
  4. Enter "Everyone" and click "OK" to accept
  5. Select "Allow" for the "Query Value", "Enumerate Subkeys", "Notify" and "Read Control" permissions. Do not change any existing permissions.

Warning: Do not give Everyone Write permission on this key, as doing so may introduce vulnerabilities.

In some cases it may also be necessary to set permissions for some of the keys in Registry permissions required for Flash Player install or update (TechNote tn_19148).
