Installing Shockwave 11.5 in Max OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)

Issue

After updating to Max OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), attempting to install Adobe Shockwave 11.5 returns an error:

OS X 10.6 Shockwave install warning

After confirming the error dialog, the Shockwave installer dialog displays behind the Finder window. Bringing the installer to the front allows you to complete the Shockwave install. However, attempting to view Shockwave content fails to display Shockwave content.

Solution

This dialog appears because Adobe Shockwave 11.5 is a 32-bit application, and OS X 10.6 is a  64-bit operating system.

To view Shockwave content in OS X 10.6, Safari (and other 64-bit browsers forthcoming) must be in 32-bit mode:

  1. Quit Safari.
  2. Control-click the Applications folder in the Dock.
  3. Select Open Applications.
  4. Single-click Safari.
  5. Choose Command-I to open Applications Info for Safari (or control-click and select Get Info).
  6. Select Open in 32-bit mode.
  7. Close the Applications Info dialog.
  8. Restart Safari.

Note: As of September 2009, Adobe has not announced future plans for 64-bit native Shockwave Players. Future public announcements will appear on Adobe.com.
