Title

Adobe Reader 9: Permissions in registry keys are altered during installationProducts affected

Issue

After you have installed Reader 9, if you install Internet Explorer or any other browser-based application (i.e., SAP applications), the installation fails and you receive errors related to permissions in the registry or messages such as:

"You do not have the required permissions to make changes to the system configuration...."

Solution

Use one or more of the following solutions:

  • Uninstall Reader 9.1, install Internet Explorer, and then reinstall Reader 9.1. By following this installation order, you avoid the permissions problem.

  • Change the permissions on the following key in the registry to allow "Full Control" to administrators:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{34A715A0-6587-11D0-924A-0020AFC7AC4D}

  • Create an MST file using Adobe Customization Wizard 9, which can be used to transform the standard Reader installation for enterprise deployment.

         1) Open the Reader MSI in Adobe Customizarion Wizard 9 and select the direct editor.

         2)  In the Tables Column select 'LockRegPermissions'.

         3) Under the path column locate these three rows:

Path User Permission
CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{34A715A0-6587-11D0-924A-0020AFC7AC4D} 1 131097
CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{34A715A0-6587-11D0-924A-0020AFC7AC4D} 22 983103
CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{34A715A0-6587-11D0-924A-0020AFC7AC4D} 26 131097

        4) Change the Permission cells for user 1 (admin) and user 26 (user) from '131097' to '983103'.

        5) Add any other required customizations if needed.

        6) Generate the MST file.

        7) Install Acrobat or Reader with this MST file.

Additional Information

Adobe Reader 9.1 modifies permissions on some keys in the registry required by Internet Explorer. It sets the permissions on these keys to read-only for administrator users. In order to successfully install Internet Explorer, the administrator needs full rights on these keys.

For example:

After installing Adobe Reader 8, the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{34A715A0-6587-11D0-924A-0020AFC7AC4D} has the following permissions:

Administrator: Full Control, Read

System: Full Control, Read

After installing Adobe Reader 9, the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{34A715A0-6587-11D0-924A-0020AFC7AC4D} has the following permissions:

Administrator: Read

System: Full Control, Read

This issue has already been fixed in the build for Acrobat/Reader 9.2.
