Double-clicking a FLV after Adobe Flash 8 is installed does not open the file in Adobe Flash Player

Issue

Double-clicking an Adobe Flash Video (FLV) file does not open the file in the standalone Adobe Flash Player as expected. Instead, you are prompted to choose an application from an Open With... dialog box.

This issue does not occur for all customers, and is restricted to customers who have both Adobe Flash 8 and Adobe Flash MX 2004 on the same computer.

Reason

If you switch between Adobe Flash 8 and Adobe Flash MX 2004, Flash 8 does not reset the .flv registry, which is necessary to associate the file open and icon correctly.

Ref. (140747).

Solution

To fix this issue you need to associate the file with Adobe Flash Player 8 as follows:

  1. Right-click a file with the extension whose association you want to change, then click Open With.
  2. In the Open With dialog box, choose the program that should be used to open the file (Adobe Flash Player 8 in this case), or click Browse to locate the program that you want.
  3. Select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box.

Note: Association of the extension with the Adobe Flash Player is by design, but Adobe Flash Player 8 will not actually play FLV files. Launching Flash MX 2004 will break the file association.
