Data Connection Wizard fails in Flash 8

Issue

When using the Data Connection Wizard in Macromedia Flash 8, an error may occur: "While executing in MyFileName.fla, a JavaScript error occurred."

At that point the wizard fails to complete.

Reason

The Flash Data Connection Wizard is a Flash extension that makes it simpler to add connected Data components to a Flash application. It was originally created for use with Flash MX 2004 Professional.

It is used in several Macromedia Developer Center articles, including "Data for Designers: Connecting to Data in Flash Using Data Wizards" and "Employee Updater: Building a Client-Server Application with Macromedia Flash Data Connection Wizard and ColdFusion".

This behavior is caused by the Data Connection Wizard installer overwriting the updated DataBindingClasses.swc component with a new version that does not work with Flash 8.

Solution

To resolve this issue:

  1. Uninstall the existing Data Connection Wizard using the Macromedia Extension Manager.
  2. Reinstall the Data Connection Wizard from the original MXP file.
  3. When prompted to replace the existing DataBindingClasses.swc, choose no. The extension install will then complete.

You should now be able to use the Data Connection Wizard.

Additional Information

Download the Data Connection Wizard from the Macromedia Exchange.
