ColdFusion MX 7: 'The Serial Number entered is not valid' error when updating

Issue


When converting a trial or developer edition of ColdFusion MX to a fully licensed copy, the error "The Serial Number entered is not valid" may be encountered when entering the serial number in the New License field within the ColdFusion MX Administrator.

Reason


ColdFusion MX licenses are either Standard edition or Enterprise edition licenses. The ColdFusion MX install is either Standard or Enterprise. If you try entering a Standard serial number in an Enterprise install, you will get this error. Option 2 (multiserver install) and option 3 (J2EE install) are examples of Enterprise installations. Entering a serial number beginning with CPD with either of these installation options will cause the error.

Solution


Uninstalling the Enterprise install and installing the Standard server install with the Standard serial number will solve the problem.
