Failed to Install error when you install the Photoshop 11.0.1 update (Windows)

Issue

When you try to install the Photoshop 11.0.1 update, one or more of the following errors occurs:

The Update Failed
Done with Error. Adobe Photoshop CS4 11.0.1 - Failed to install
Installation incomplete.

Details

You updated your AVG virus definition on January 26, 2009 to version 270.10.14/1917.

Reason

The Setup.exe for the Photoshop installer was incorrectly identified by AVG Free 8 or AVG Internet Security Suite 8 as Trojan Horse Crypt.CFR. Consequently, the Setup.exe file was deleted or quarantined, depending on how your AVG preferences are set.

Solution

Do one or both of the following solutions.

IMPORTANT: Update your virus definitions so this issue does not recur.

Solution 1: Restore Setup.exe and then run the Photoshop 11.0.1 update.

Close all applications.
Open the AVG user interface.
Choose History > Virus Vault.
Select Setup.exe in the Virus Vault.
Click Restore.
Close the AVG user interface.
Install the Photoshop 11.0.1 update.

Solution 2: Repair Photoshop CS4 or your Creative Suite 4, and then install the Photoshop 11.0.1 update.

Close all applications.
Do one of the following:
- If you purchased Photoshop CS4 or Adobe Creative Suite 4 as physical software, then insert your installation DVD into your computer's DVD drive. Follow the on-screen instructions to start the installation.
- If you downloaded Photoshop CS4 or Adobe Creative Suite 4 from the Adobe Online Store, double click Setup.exe in the folder to which you extracted your download. (If you deleted the extracted files, then first double click on the file you downloaded to extract the files again. If you did not keep the file or files that your downloaded, then download them again. Sign in at www.adobe.com/membership, click View Order History, and find your order on the list.)
When the installer starts, click Reinstall.
Select Adobe Photoshop CS4 in the list of Installed Products.
Click Install, and then follow the remaining on-screen instructions to complete the repair.
Restart your computer.
Install the 11.0.1 update.

To install the 11.0.1 update, choose Help > Updates in Photoshop CS4, or download the update from the Adobe.com update web site.

Additional Information

The identification of the Setup.exe as a virus was a false positive, and AVG updated their virus definitions to correct this error on January 27, 2009.
