Title

How to create a custom dictionary for use in LiveCycle Designer ESProducts affected

Issue

In Designer, you can add additional custom dictionaries to expand the list of correctly spelled words. These custom dictionaries may contain words in specific language or unique terms used by your company, for example, medical or legal terms.

Designer ES accepts only Proximity dictionary files (*.clam) as the custom dictionaries but does not provide tools for creating such dictionaries.

Solution

The following procedures show you how to manually create custom dictionaries in Designer ES. These procedures are suitable for creating small dictionaries because they require you to manually add words to the dictionary.

You can create two types of custom dictionaries:

  • language-specific: A dictionary that contains words for a selected language. Spell checker consults this dictionary only if the form or object locale is the same as the language of this dictionary.
  • all languages: A dictionary that contains words that are considered correct in all languages. Spell checker consults this dictionary regardless of the form or object locale.

To create a language-specific dictionary:

  1. In Designer ES, select Tools > Options > Spelling.
  2. In the Spelling panel, click Edit the Custom Dictionary.
  3. In the Language list, select the language for your custom dictionary.
  4. In the Word box, type the word that you want to add to the dictionary and click Add.
  5. Repeat step 4 until all the required words are added, and then click Done.
  6. Locate the following folder on your hard drive:
  • in XP OS: C:\Documents and Settings\[your user name]\Application Data\Adobe\Linguistics\Dictionaries\Designer Custom Dictionary\[language]\
  • in Vista: C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\LocalLow\Adobe\Linguistics\Dictionaries\Designer Custom Dictionary\[language]\

where [language] is the name of the language code that you selected for your dictionary. If you are not sure what the code is for the language you selected, check the langcodes.pdf file. This folder contains the added.clam file, which contains all the words you added.

  1. Rename the added.clam file by using the format filename-lang.clam, where:
  • filename is a string that identifies the content of the file, such as TechnicalTerms
  • lang is the language code (see the langcodes.pdf file for the correct code)

For example, if you are creating a file that contains technical terms in French, the file name should be TechnicalTerms-frn.clam.

  1. Move the renamed file to a location that is accessible to all users.
  2. Add the new custom dictionary to Designer ES, as described in the "To add a dictionary" topic in the LiveCycle Designer ES Help.

To create an all-languages dictionary:

  1. Select Tools > Options > Spelling.
  2. Click Edit the Custom Dictionary.
  3. From the Language list, select English (United States).
  4. Add the required words and click Done.
  5. Locate the following folder on your hard drive:
  • in XP OS: C:\Documents and Settings\[your user name]\Application Data\Adobe\Linguistics\Dictionaries\Designer Custom Dictionary\eng\
  • in Vista: C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\LocalLow\Adobe\Linguistics\Dictionaries\Designer Custom Dictionary\eng\

This folder contains the added.clam file, which contains all the words you added.

  1. Rename the added.clam file to filename-all.clam, where filename is a string that identifies the content of the dictionary (for example, TechnicalTerms-all.clam).
  2. Move the renamed file to a location that is accessible to all users.
  3. Add the new custom dictionary to Designer ES, as described in the "To add a dictionary" topic in the LiveCycle Designer ES Help.
