This TechNote describes how to install version 5.5 of the Adobe Camera Raw plug-in.
Before you begin
Installing Camera Raw 5.5 requires administrator access. If you use Mac OS or Windows Vista, then the operating system may prompt you to enter the name and password of an administrator user account. If you use Windows XP, then log into your computer using an administrator account before you begin.
Windows users: Some of the steps in this TechNote list files by their full file name, which includes file name extensions (for example, Camera Raw.8bi). On Windows, file name extensions for known file types are not visible by default. To make file name extensions visible, do the following:
- In Windows Explorer, choose Tools > Folder Options (Windows XP) or Organize > Folder And Search Options (Windows Vista).
- Select the View tab near the top of the Folder Options window.
- In the Advanced Settings area of the View tab, deselect Hide Extensions For Known File Types.
- Click OK.
Windows users: Some of the steps in this document require that you determine whether you are using a 32-bit or 64-bit edition of Windows. To determine which system type you have, see "Determine whether your computer is running a 32-bit or a 64-bit edition of Windows" (TechNote kb407673).
Install Camera Raw 5.5 for Photoshop CS4, Bridge CS4, or After Effects CS4 on Mac OS
You can install an updated Adobe Camera Raw plug-in automatically by doing one of the following:
- Use Adobe Updater to download and install the update. To start Adobe Updater, open any CS4 application, choose Help > Updates, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
- Download and then run the Camera Raw updater.
To download and run the Camera Raw updater:
- Quit all Adobe applications.
- Download the Camera Raw 5.5 updater from www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4577.
- If the AdobeCameraRaw-5.5-mul-AdobeUpdate disk image automatically opens when you have finished downloading the file, then go to Step 4; otherwise, double-click on the file you downloaded to open the disk image.
- Double-click on Setup. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Alternatively, you can install an updated Camera Raw plug-in manually.
To install Camera Raw 5.5 manually:
- Quit all Adobe applications.
- Download Camera Raw 5.5 from www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4579.
- If the Camera_Raw_5_5 disk image automatically opens when you have finished downloading the file, then go to Step 4; otherwise, double-click on the file you downloaded to open the disk image.
- Drag the Camera Raw.plugin file from the Camera_Raw_5_5 disk image into /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS4/File Formats. If you are prompted to overwrite or replace the existing plug-in file, then click Replace.
Note: This file path refers to the Library folder at the root level of the startup disk volume, not the Library folder inside a user's Home folder. - To install Camera Profiles, double-click on CameraProfiles.mpkg and then follow the on-screen instructions.
Install Camera Raw 5.5 for Photoshop CS4, Bridge CS4, or After Effects CS4 on Windows
You can install an updated Adobe Camera Raw plug-in automatically by doing one of the following:
- Use Adobe Updater to download and install the update. To start Adobe Updater, open any CS4 application, choose Help > Updates, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
- Download and then run the Camera Raw updater.
To download and run the Camera Raw updater:
- Close all Adobe applications.
- Download the Camera Raw 5.5 updater from www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4578.
- Extract the contents of the ZIP file you downloaded.
Note: ZIP files are compressed files which contain other files. On Windows Vista, you can extract the contents of the ZIP file by right-clicking on the file you downloaded, choosing Extract All, clicking Extract, and then opening the newly-created Camera_Raw_5_5_updater folder. On Windows XP, you can extract the contents of the ZIP file by right-clicking on the file that you downloaded, choosing Open With > Compressed (Zipped) Folders, and then dragging all files and folders to your Desktop.
- Double-click on Setup.exe. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Alternatively, you can install an updated Camera Raw plug-in manually.
To install Camera Raw 5.5 manually on a 32-bit edition of Windows:
- Close all Adobe applications.
- Download Camera Raw 5.5 from www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4580.
- Extract the Camera Raw.8bi file from the ZIP file you downloaded. (Extract only the Camera Raw.8bi file that is at the top level of the ZIP file. Do not extract the Camera Raw.8bi file from the Win64 folder that is inside the ZIP file. This folder contains the 64-bit edition of the Camera Raw plug-in, which is compatible only with the 64-bit edition of Photoshop CS4.)
Note: ZIP files are compressed files which contain other files. - To install Camera Profiles, extract the CameraProfiles.exe file from the ZIP file that you downloaded. Next, double-click on CameraProfiles.exe and then follow the on-screen instructions.
To install Camera Raw 5.5 manually on a 64-bit edition of Windows:
- Close all Adobe applications.
- Download Camera Raw 5.5 from www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4580.
- Extract the Camera Raw.8bi file from the ZIP file you downloaded. (In this step, extract only the Camera Raw.8bi file that is at the top level of the ZIP file. In Step 5, you will extract the Camera Raw.8bi file that is inside the Win64 folder.)
Note: ZIP files are compressed files which contain other files. On Windows Vista, you can extract Camera Raw.8bi by right-clicking on the file you downloaded, choosing Extract All, clicking Extract, and then opening the newly-created Camera_Raw_5_5 folder. On Windows XP, you can extract Camera Raw.8bi by right-clicking on the file that you downloaded, choosing Open With > Compressed (Zipped) Folders, and then dragging Camera Raw.8bi to your Desktop.
- Move Camera Raw.8bi into C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS4\File Formats. If you are prompted to overwrite the existing plug-in file, then click Yes or Overwrite.
- Extract the Camera Raw.8bi file from the Win64 folder that is inside the ZIP file you downloaded. This Camera Raw.8bi file is the 64-bit Camera Raw plug-in for Photoshop CS4.
- Move the 64-bit Camera Raw.8bi file into C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS4\File Formats. If you are prompted to overwrite the existing plug-in file, then click Yes or Overwrite.
- To install Camera Profiles, extract the CameraProfiles.exe file from the ZIP file that you downloaded. Next, double-click on CameraProfiles.exe and then follow the on-screen instructions.
Install Camera Raw 5.5 for Photoshop Elements 7 on Windows
- Close Photoshop Elements 7.
- Download Camera Raw 5.5 from www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4582.
- Extract the Camera Raw.8bi file from the ZIP file you downloaded. (Extract only the Camera Raw.8bi file that is at the top level of the ZIP file. Do not extract the Camera Raw.8bi file from the Win64 folder that is inside the ZIP file. This folder contains the 64-bit edition of the Camera Raw plug-in, which is compatible only with the 64-bit edition of Photoshop CS4.)

Install Camera Raw 5.5 for Photoshop Elements 6 on Mac OS
- Quit all Adobe applications.
- Download Camera Raw 5.5 from www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4581.
- If the Camera_Raw_5_5 disk image automatically opens when you have finished downloading the file, then go to Step 4; otherwise, double-click on the file you downloaded to open the disk image.
- Drag the Camera Raw.plugin file from the Camera_Raw_5_5 disk image into /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS3/File Formats. If you are prompted to overwrite or replace the existing plug-in file, then click Replace.

Do not extract the Camera Raw.8bi file from the Win64 folder that is inside the ZIP file. This folder contains the 64-bit edition of the Camera Raw plug-in, which is compatible only with the 64-bit edition of Photoshop CS4.)

- Close Premiere Elements 7.
- Download Camera Raw 5.5 from www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4583.
- Extract the Camera Raw.8bi file from the ZIP file you downloaded. (Extract only the Camera Raw.8bi file that is at the top level of the ZIP file. Do not extract the Camera Raw.8bi file from the Win64 folder that is inside the ZIP file. This folder contains the 64-bit edition of the Camera Raw plug-in, which is compatible only with the 64-bit edition of Photoshop CS4.)
