Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Readme

Welcome to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2. This document contains late-breaking product information, feature notes, and troubleshooting tips not covered in the Lightroom documentation.

Installing Lightroom 2

Do one of the following

Insert the CD in your drive, and follow the on-screen instructions. (If the installer does not launch automatically, double-click CD Volume:\ Lightroom 2\Install Lightroom 2 (Windows) or Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.pkg (Mac OS) at the root level of your disk to start the installation process.)
If you downloaded the software from the web, open the folder and double-click Adobe Photoshop Lightroom (Windows or Mac OS), and then follow the on-screen instructions.

64-bit Installation Notes

Mac: Lightroom 2 is a 32-bit application by default. For customers using OS X 10.5 on an Intel-based computer, Lightroom 2.0 can be used as a 64-bit application by selecting 'Adobe Lightroom 2' in the Application folder, choosing Get Info(CMD I) and un-checking the 'Open in 32 Bit Mode' option.

Windows: The Lightroom installer contains both a 32-bit and 64-bit version of the application. By default, the 64-bit version will be installed only on Windows Vista 64-bit operating systems. All other operating systems will install the 32-bit version by default.

Serial Numbers

You can find the 24-digit serial number (e.g. 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000) on the back cover of your CD holder. Online or Electronic Software Delivery(ESD) customers will find the serial number both on the receipt page from the online store, and in the e-mail confirmation you received. You will be asked for this number when installing Photoshop Lightroom.
If you purchased an upgrade license you will also need to enter a Lightroom 1 serial number. This is not required if Lightroom 1 is already successfully licensed on the current computer.
If your new 24-digit serial number does not work, please contact Adobe Customer Service at 800-833-6687 for assistance. For those outside North America, please contact Adobe Customer Service in your region for assistance.

Upgrade Notes

To update your Lightroom 1 catalog simply launch Lightroom 2 and you will be able to select and upgrade your Lightroom 1 catalog.
The Lightroom 2 catalog upgrade process does not erase or remove your original Lightroom 1 catalog. If you wish to try the Lightroom 2 30-day trial by upgrading your existing catalog, you may always return to Lightroom 1.4 and continue using your previous catalog. Please note that any changes or work completed in your catalog once it has been upgraded to work with Lightroom 2 will not be available in Lightroom 1.
Upgrading a Library from Photoshop Elements 6 for Windows requires that Photoshop Elements be installed on the computer at the time of upgrade.
Lightroom 2 beta catalogs may be upgraded using the same methods available for Lightroom 1 catalogs.(You will see some variations in the local corrections applied to your images in the Lightroom 2 beta)
If you attempt to upgrade the same Lightroom 1 catalog more than once, Lightroom will inform you of the location of the previously upgraded catalog.

General Program Notes

Known Issues

Burning exported images to disc is not available for the Lightroom 64-bit Windows application.
Upgrading a Lightroom 1 catalog during a catalog import can create multiple temporary copies of the catalog while upgrading
Lightroom performance can be impacted when the Window's Recycle Bin contains thousands of files
Lightroom may not automatically launch an import dialog when a memory card is attached to a Windows Vista computer. Please select the Import button in the Library and select the attached card reader to begin the import.
Lightroom 2 beta local correction brush adjustments may not match exactly with the final rendering available in Lightroom 2.

Important File Format Support Exceptions (Formats not supported):

CMYK Files
PSD files saved without a composite image. (Saved without âœMaximize Compatibilityâ setting)
Files with dimensions greater than 65,000 pixels per side (512 Megapixel Total)
All video files, including those acquired by digital still cameras

Working with Lightroom 2 and Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw

Lightroom and Photoshop Camera Raw share the same image processing technology to ensure consistent and compatible results across applications that support raw processing. These applications include Photoshop CS3, Photoshop Elements 6.0 and Premiere Elements 4.0.

Photoshop Camera Raw 4.5

Adobe applications must be updated with the Camera Raw 4.5 plug-in in order to ensure compatibility with Lightroom 2 develop module settings. Photoshop CS3 users can update the Camera Raw plug-in automatically using the Update tool listed under the Help menu. The Camera Raw 4.5 plug-in can also be downloaded and installed manually by visiting the Adobe web site: www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html. Please follow the installation instructions carefully.

Sharing Lightroom Settings with Camera Raw 4.5

By default, Lightroom's develop module settings are stored in Lightroom's database. In order to ensure that Lightroom develop settings can be viewed by Camera Raw 4.5 the settings must be written to the XMP metadata block for that file. This metadata is stored in an XMP sidecar file (Imagename.xmp) in the current image directory of proprietary raw files or stored directly within DNG files. To update images with the latest develop settings, choose the library module and select the group of target images. Choose the shortcut Command(Ctrl) + S to save the settings to the XMP metadata block.

Viewing Lightroom settings in Camera Raw 4.5

Before working in conjunction with Lightroom and Camera Raw please set the Camera Raw preference to: Save image settings in: Sidecar ".xmp" files. By default Camera Raw will display the image adjustments exactly as performed in Lightroom's develop module. However, at this time Camera Raw 4.5 is unable to support further adjustments to the following settings or tools:

Local Adjustment Brush
Graduated Adjustment Filter
Cloning and Healing Opacity Settings
Post-crop Vignette

The controls currently available in Camera Raw 4.5 will continue to function normally and provide incremental edits beyond those performed in Lightroom. The Lightroom adjustments that are not available in Camera Raw 4.5 can be cleared by choosing the âœClear Imported Settingsâ option in the Camera Raw settings menu.

Viewing Camera Raw settings in Lightroom

Raw files edited by previous versions of Camera Raw will maintain their previous appearance when imported into Lightroom. Note: Those files must have been edited with the preference set to Save image settings in: Sidecar âœ.xmpâ files in order for Lightroom to respect the previous edit. Files edited in Camera Raw after importation into Lightroom can be updated in Lightroom by choosing the âœRead Metadata from Files â from the Metadata file menu. Note: This menu option is only available in the Lightroom Library.

Additional Notes on Camera Raw and Lightroom

Camera Raw will only read the current settings for the primary image in the Lightroom Library. Virtual Copy adjustments and Snapshot adjustments will not be displayed or available in Camera Raw 4.5
