When switching to design view in Flex Builder after installing 3.1 SDK update, you receive the following message:

• This component is based on Application, which is not a visual
  component. Switch to source mode to edit it"

Reason

You mustupdate to Flex Builder 3.0.1 to use design mode with Flex 3.1 SDK.
