TechNote

Data loss if PDF size = the size of the LiveCycle ES setting: Default document max inline.

Issue

This article describes a data loss issue that occurs when LiveCycle ES produces PDFs that are exactly the same size as the LiveCycle ES setting Default document max inline size (bytes).

A log message similar to the following indicates the failure may have occurred:
WARN [com.adobe.util.FileCollector] DOCS006: Failed to delete a file "C:\Adobe\LiveCycle8.2\jboss\server\all\svcnative\DocumentStorage\docm1209920029640\j68f04kcq2hl9q7gqz48pb0k200000vi" after 4340 attempts. The file could still be locked. If this message is consistent, consider restarting the server.

If this message appears recurringly in your log files, do the following to confirm the exact nature of the problem:

  1. Determine the value of the LiveCycle ES setting Default document max inline size (bytes). The default value is 65536 bytes (64 KB); however, your value may be different if your LiveCycle ES adminstrator changed it.
  2. Search your system logs for PDFs that were the same size as the Default document max inline size (bytes) setting and determine whether they failed.

The combination of the error message in log files and corresponding failed PDFs confirms that this problem exists on your deployment.

Solution

You can prevent future occurrences of this problem by changing the value of the Default document max inline size setting to a new value that is unlikely to occur (for example, 1 byte). The new value may be larger or smaller than the default value.

When determining the new value, carefully consider the range of PDF sizes that your LiveCycle ES deployment produces. After you change the value, this problem will reoccur for PDFs of the same size as this new value.

Note: Setting the Default document max inline size value to a very low value may reduce LiveCycle ES performance. Setting a very large value will increase the memory usage and may improve or reduce LiveCycle ES performance. Perform the following procedure to change the Default document max inline size setting.

To change the LiveCycle ES setting Default document max inline (bytes):

  1. Log in to LiveCycle Administration Console and click Settings > Core System Settings > Configurations.
  2. In the Default document max inline size (bytes) box, change the value to a value that will never match the size of PDFs that are produced (for example, use the value 1) and then click OK.
