Check Spelling fails with an unknown error or does not begin checking

Issue

Choosing Text > Check Spelling or Text > Spelling Setup in Macromedia Flash 8 causes an error: "The spelling checker could not be initialized due to an unknown error." In some cases the error does not occur, but spell checking does not begin.

Reason

The path to the Flash 8 Dictionaries folder cannot contain Unicode characters. For example, if the operating system language is English, but the path to the Flash 8 Dictionary contains Latvian characters, Check Spelling will fail. Other languages may also cause the same behavior.

The default path to the Flash 8 Dictionaries folder is usually:

  • Windows: C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Flash 8\en\Configuration\Dictionaries
  • Macintosh: Applications: Macromedia Flash 8: Configuration: Dictionaries

Solution

Modify the path to the Dictionaries folder to contain non-unicode characters.
