Error "Unable to read Adobe file version for path /Library/Fonts/MinionPro-Bold.otf" when installing the Adobe Creative Suite 4 or Point Products on Mac OSXProducts affected

Issue

When you install Adobe Creative Suite 4 or point products the following error message appears in the More Info dialog box:

[ 14] Fri Oct 31 14:30:08 2008 ERROR Unable to read Adobe file version for path /Library/Fonts/MinionPro-Bold.otf [ 14] Fri Oct 31 14:30:08 2008 FATAL JavaScript processing failed with error: Uncaught JavaScript exception: Unable to read Adobe file version for path /Library/Fonts/MinionPro-Bold.otf [ 14] Oct 31 14:30:08 2008 DEBUG

Reason

The Adobe Creative Suite 4 installer attempts to install and update fonts on your machine. When the installer is unable to verify permissions to the font because the font is locked or damaged, the installation fails.

Solution

Do one or more of the following:

Solution 1: Run the CS5 Cleaner Tool

The Adobe CS5 Cleaner Tool helps resolve installation problems for Adobe Creative Suite 5, Adobe Creative Suite 4, and Adobe Creative Suite 3 software. The tool can clean up install records for pre-release installations of Creative Suite products. See Resolve installation problems with CS5 Cleaner Tool (cpsid_82947).

Solution 2: Unlock locked fonts.

To identify the fonts in the More Info Dialog:

  1. The font preventing the installation is found at the end of the message, "Unable to read Adobe file version for path /Library/Fonts/". In the error above, MinionPro-Bold.otf is generating the error message.

Note: Repeat the steps below if more than one font is indicated in the dialog box.

To determine if the font is locked:

  1. Locate the font listed in the More Info dialog box.
  2. Ctrl-click on the font and choose Get Info.

Important: If the Locked check box in the General section of the More Info dialog box is checked, proceed to the unlock fonts section. If it is not checked, proceed to Get Info on the next font in installer log file.

To unlock fonts:

  1. Get Info on the locked font.
  2. Open the Details section of the Ownership & Permission section.
  3. Click the lock next to the Owner field.
  4. In the Owner pop-up menu, choose your log-in name. Enter your system password when it is requested.
  5. Uncheck the Locked check box in the General section.
  6. Choose system in the Owner pop-up menu.
  7. Close Get Info.

Note: Fonts can become damaged, and damaged fonts also can cause this problem. If your installer log indicates a font problem but your fonts are not locked, or if this problem still occurs after you've unlocked them, then move the font(s) specified in the log to the desktop or a temporary folder, and reinstall.
