Error: "The Specified Module could not be found: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue\CS3\Client\3.1.0\VersionCueUI.DLL" when you start Photoshop CS3 or open files (Windows)Products affected
Issue
You receive the error message "Photoshop.exe - Fatal Application Exit The Specified Module could not be found: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue\CS3\Client\3.1.0\VersionCueUI.DLL" when you start Adobe Photoshop, or when you open images from Photoshop in XP and Vista.Reason
This error can be caused by a failed update to the Version Cue Client, or by a failed installation of Photoshop.Important: Bridge CS3, Photoshop CS3, and other Creative Suite 3 applications require the Version Cue Client to be installed.
Solution
Work through the solutions below in order they are presented.
After you perform each solution, restart the application that encountered the error to determine if the problem still exists. If the problem recurs, then proceed to the next solution. If it does not recur, then install the Version Cue CS3 Client.
You can download the latest update from the Adobe website at www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=100&platform=Windows.
Important: If the problem recurs after installing the update, a conflict exists on your computer that prevents the installation from completing successfully. Common conflicts include security software, other applications that run in the background, and conflicting user permissions. To successfully install this update, repeat the solution, apply one or both of the steps from the Additional Information section below, and then install the Version Cue CS3 Client update.
Solution 1: Remove the Version Cue CS3 Client.
- Close all Adobe Creative Suite 3 (CS3) applications.
- Do one of the following:
- If you use a 32-bit edition of Windows, then delete the \Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS3\Client\3.1.0 folder and these two files:
- \Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS3\Client\3.0.0.patches
- \Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS3\Client\build.txt
- If you use a 64-bit edition of Windows, then delete the \Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS3\Client\3.1.0 folder and these two files:
- \Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS3\Client\3.0.0.patches
- \Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS3\Client\build.txt
- If you use a 32-bit edition of Windows, then delete the \Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS3\Client\3.1.0 folder and these two files:
Solution 2: Remove the Version Cue CS3 Client, and then repair the installaton of the application or Suite giving the error.
- Close all Adobe Creative Suite 3 (CS3) applications.
- Do one of the following:
- If you use a 32-bit edition of Windows, then delete the \Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS3\Client folder.
- If you use a 64-bit edition of Windows, then delete the \Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS3\Client folder.
- Launch the installation for the Adobe CS3 application(s) or Suite that you have installed, using the appropriate entry in the Add or Remove Programs (Windows XP) or the Programs and Features (Windows Vista) Control Panel.
- Choose the Install or Reinstall option and then click Next. Follow the remaining on-screen prompts to repair the installation of the Adobe CS3 application(s) or Suite that you have installed.
Solution 3: Uninstall the application or Suite giving the error, remove the remaining files for Version Cue, and then reinstall the application or Suite.
Important: If you have a Version Cue CS3 Server on your computer, back up your Version Cue Server repositories before proceeding. For more information on backing up the Version Cue server, see Back up the Version Cue Server in Bridge CS3 Help.
- Close all Adobe Creative Suite 3 (CS3) applications.
- Launch the installer for the Adobe CS3 application(s) or Suite that you have installed, using the appropriate entry in the Add or Remove Programs (Windows XP) or the Programs and Features (Windows Vista) Control Panel.
- Choose the Remove option and then click Next. Follow the remaining on-screen prompts to complete the removal of the Adobe CS3 application(s) or Suite that you have installed.
- Verify that the following folders have been removed. If any of these folders are still present, then delete them:
On 32-bit editions of Windows:
- \Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS3
- \Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3
On 64-bit editions of Windows:
- \Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS3
- \Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3
- Shut down, and then restart your computer.
- Re-install your CS3 product or Suite, using your original installation media.
Additional Information
1. Install the Version Cue update while in a simplified mode.
Some applications or services may cause conflicts, such as system errors or freezes, when running concurrently with an installer. Before installing the Version Cue CS3 Client update, disable other applications, including startup items (items that start automatically when you start Windows), and services.
To disable startup items and non Microsoft services in Windows XP:
- Quit all applications.
- Choose Start > Run, and type msconfig in the Open box. Click OK.
- Click the Startup and Services tab, and write down all unselected items.
- Click the General tab, and choose Selective startup.
- Deselect Load Startup Items. Verify that Process System.ini File, Process WIN.INI File, and Load System Services are selected (checked).
- Click the Services Tab, and select Hide All Microsoft Services.
- Click Disable All.
- Reselect the FLEXnet Licensing Service.
- Click OK, and restart Windows.
- Right-click icons in the Notification Area (called the System Tray in earlier versions of Windows) to close or disable any startup items that are still active..
Note: When you restart, you'll be notified that the System Configuration Utility has made changes to the way that Windows starts up. Click OK, and when the System Configuration Utility appears, click Cancel.
To reenable startup items and services:
- Choose Start > Run, type msconfig, and click OK.
- Choose Normal Startup on the General tab, but deselect any items that you wrote down in Step 3 of the Solutins section.
- Click OK, and restart the computer.
Note: If unselected items were present on the Services or Startup tab, then you will need to deselect them again.
To disable startup items and non Microsoft services in Windows Vista:
- Quit all applications.
- Choose Start, type msconfig in the Search text box, and press Enter.
- Write down all unselected items under the Startup and Services tabs.
- Click the General tab, and choose Selective Startup.
- Click the Startup tab and select Disable All.
- Click the Services tab and select Hide All Microsoft Services.
- Select Disable All then re-select FLEXnet Licensing Service. If you are unsure whether an item is essential, leave it deselected (disabled).
- Click Apply, and restart Windows for the changes to take effect.
Note: Upon restart, you'll be notified that the some startup items were blocked. If you do, click OK. When the System Configuration utility appears, click Cancel. - Right-click icons in the Notification Area and close or disable any startup items that are still active.
To reenable startup items and services:
- Choose Start, type msconfig in the Search text box, and press Enter.
- Click the General tab, and choose Normal Startup.
- Deselect any items that you wrote down in Step 3 of the previous section.
- Click OK, and restart Windows for the changes to take effect.
2. Install the Version Cue CS3 Client update while logged into a new local administrator account.
Your use account may lack sufficient privileges to install the update, or permissions for your user account may be damaged. Before installing the Version Cue CS3 Client update, create a new local administrator user account and then log into this account.
