Adobe Setup initializes and then disappears in Creative Suite 3 or Photoshop CS3

Issue

When you run the Adobe Creative Suite 3 or Adobe Photoshop CS3 installer, the Adobe Setup dialog box disappears after it finishes initializing. The installer does not continue.

Solution

Do one or more of the following solutions:

Solution 1: Uninstall all instances of Flash version 8.

To uninstall Flash Player first use the general uninstaller provided by Adobe.

  1. Download the Adobe Flash Player uninstaller to your desktop from http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_14157.
  2. Before you run this uninstaller, be sure to read the instructions and close all running programs.

There may be instances when the Flash Player has been uninstalled, but not completely removed. This issue has been reported for Flash Player version 8.0.24.0 but it may occur with other versions.

For example, after running the regular uninstaller from the instructions above, you may still find Flash Player in Add/Remove programs. These remnants can prevent the Adobe Creative Suite or Master Collection from installing. To verify the version, locate Flash Player in Add/Remove programs and select Click Here For Support Information. (Older versions, such as 8.0.24.0, may be listed as Macromedia Flash Player.)

If Flash Player 8.0.24.0 is found on your machine, then follow these Instructions to remove the registry entries left behind.

  1. Download and install the Microsoft Cleanup Utility from the Microsoft website at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301.
  2. Choose Start > Run and type the following:
    "C:\Program Files\Windows Installer Clean up\MsiZap.exe" T {E3D278BD-FC97-4F87-BB1F-689AE0CB9122}
  3. A command window appears briefly on screen.
  4. Select Start > Run again and type in the following:
    "C:\Program Files\Windows Installer Clean up\MsiZap.exe" T {5E8A1B08-0FBD-4543-9646-F2C2D0D05750}

Note: If the problem occurs with a version of Flash Player other than 8.0.24.0, then contact Adobe support.

Solution 2: Clean up the failed install and reinstall.
  1. Uninstall Creative Suite 3 and all of its components.
    1. In Windows XP, use the Add or Remove Control Panel, and in Windows Vista, use the Programs and Features Control Panel. In Mac OS, use the appropriate installer in the Application/Utilities/Adobe Installers folder.
    2. Delete the Caps, Installers, and Backup folders, if present, from the Program Files/Common Files/Adobe folder.
    3. Delete any CS3 application folders that remain under the Program Files or the Program Files/Adobe folders.
  2. If you can't complete the uninstall or if errors occurred, then run the Adobe Cleanup Script at Level 3 repeatedly until the script immediately returns to you, without removing any more files. See "Remove Photoshop CS3 Public Beta" (Technote kb401056), for instructions on downloading and using this script. There are three levels of the script; each level removes more files. Level 3 is hidden; to use it, type "3" when the script asks what level you want to run.
    • Level 1: Removes all CS3 applications except Acrobat 8
    • Level 2: Removes all CS3 applications including Acrobat 8
    • Level 3: Removes all CS3 applications, Acrobat 8, and shared technologies, such as Help and Bridge.
Solution 3: Run the Microsoft Clean Up utility before you repair or reinstall the Adobe Creative Suite 3 application. (Windows only)

Warning: The Microsoft Windows Installer Clean Up utility removes only registry entries created by the application installer. Files and other registry entries that remain could cause inadvertent effects on the system if not removed. If you use this utility, you may have to reinstall other programs that use MSI (Microsoft installer). Read information about the utility on the Microsoft website at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301.

  1. Download and install the Windows Install Clean Up utility.
    1. Visit the Microsoft website at http://support.microsoft.com and search for msicuu2.exe.
    2. Select the article "You receive the 'This patch package could not be opened' error message in an Office program."
    3. Click the link for the msicuu2.exe utility under Resolution Step 1.
    4. Save the utility to your desktop.
    5. Double-click msicuu2.exe and follow the onscreen instructions.
    6. Choose Start > Programs > Windows Install Clean Up to start the Windows Install Clean Up utility.
    7. Be sure to select the "Macromedia Flash Player 8" if listed at the very bottom. It is not listed in the [all users] section. Choose Remove.
    8. Also remove Adobe Setup, if it's listed, and anything relating to CS3 or a CS3 application.
  2. Reinstall or repair the current version of your Creative Suite 3 software.
Solution 4: Troubleshoot the issue using kb402048.

Continue troubleshooting the issue using the information in, "Creative Suite 3 and point product CS3 installer silently quits (Windows XP and Vista) (TechDoc kb402048.)

Solution 5: Contact Technical Support.

If reinstalling does not allow you to run the Suite, then contact Technical Support. The support agent may ask you to upload installer log files.

Log files for all Creative Suite applications and suites are placed in a single directory. The log file is named after the application that is being installed (for example, "Adobe Creative Suite 3 Web Premium 1.0.log.gz"). You can find the Adobe Creative Suite 3 product installation logs in the following locations by default:

  • Windows: Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Installers\
  • Mac OS: /Library/Logs/Adobe/Installers/
