Invalid serial number error when launching Photoshop Elements 5.0.2 on Windows VistaProducts affected

Issue

When you launch Photoshop Elements 5.0.2 on Windows Vista, you receive the following error message:
  • Your Adobe Photoshop Elements user name, organization, or serial number is missing or invalid

Solution

Copy the serial number registry key from a Windows XP computer

If you have access to a Windows XP computer, you can install Photoshop Elements 5.0 and copy the serial number registry key from there.
  1. Install Photoshop Elements 5.0.
  2. Choose Start >Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  3. Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{A7B609FB-83D8-4FC3-8477-1BC65ECFE85B} key and, in the right pane, double-click the EPIC_SERIAL key.
  4. Write down the number displayed in the Value Data box.
  5. Install Photoshop Elements 5.0 on the Windows Vista Machine.
  6. Choose Start, type regedit in the Search box, and then press Enter.
  7. Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{A7B609FB-83D8-4FC3-8477-1BC65ECFE85B} key and choose Edit > New > String Value.
  8. Enter EPIC_SERIAL for the value name, press enter, and then double-click it.
  9. In the Value Data box, enter the number you wrote down in step 4 and then click OK.

Additional Information

In certain unknown circumstances (likely permissions related), the serial number registry key is not written to the registry during installation. Copying the registry key from a Windows XP installation will fix the issue.
