Vista help system stops working when Dreamweaver is the default XML editor

Issue

When you install Dreamweaver, if you accept the default selection to make Dreamweaver the default editor for XML files, the Windows Vista help system stops working. When you try to run Vista "Help and Support", the following error occurs:

"Internet Explorer cannot download / from windows. Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later."

You may also see an error saying that Windows cannot find the file when trying to open XML files from within the Windows file browser. (Ref. 224272).

Reason

There is a conflict on Vista with the way that Dreamweaver is setting itself as the default XML editor.

Note: Dreamweaver 8 was released more than a year before Windows Vista became publicly available and does not officially support this new operating system. The next version of Dreamweaver, expected to be released in Spring 2007, will be certified to run on Vista. Solution

Adobe has created a registry fix that resolves this issue. Download the registry fix, unzip it and then double-click the .reg file. The .reg file will make the following change:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.xml]
@="xmlfile"
"Content Type"="text/xml"
