Save as Flash MX 2004 feature increases FLA file size
Issue
Using File > Save As to save a Macromedia Flash 8 file (FLA) as a Flash MX 2004 file causes the size of the FLA to increase dramatically.
Reason
In Flash 8, doing 'Save As' using the same file name is essentially the same as doing a regular File > Save and does not have the same effect as using the File > Save & Compact feature. This can increase the size of the FLA.

Solution
To resolve the file size issue, use File > Save As, but use a unique file name (different from the original file name). This will essentially perform a Save & Compact, creating a Flash MX 2004 file at the regular size.
Additional Information
Note: In Flash 8, the Save As dialog box remembers the last format used for a given document.
- If you have saved a document as Flash MX 2004, the next time you choose File > Save As, the dialog box shows Flash MX 2004 in the format dropdown.
- If you have not performed a File > Save As, the format dropdown defaults to Flash 8.
