Hourglass or low-resolution preview when you scroll through Organizer catalog (Photoshop Elements 4.0 on Windows)

Issue

When you scroll through the catalog in the Organizer, you experience a one-second delay before the sharp image thumbnails are displayed. You see the hourglass or a low resolution preview until the thumbnails update.

Details

You converted your catalog from Photoshop Elements 3.0 or Photoshop Album.

Solution: Erase Thumbnail Cache file, recover the Catalog, then update thumbnail images.

To erase the Thumbnail Cache file:

1. Navigate to Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Catalog Folders\[your catalog name]\

2. Delete all tn.[#].cache files.

To recover the catalog:

1. Start Photoshop Elements 4.0.

2. Press and hold Ctrl and click an Organizer Option. Continue holding Ctrl until the catalog recovery prompt appears.

3. Click OK to recover the catalog.

Note: Recovering the catalog can take more than one hour for very large catalogs.

After you recover the catalog and the catalog is open, new thumbnails should generate automatically.

Background information

The thumbnail cache is built differently in Photoshop Elements 3.0 and 4.0. When you convert the Photoshop Elements 3.0 catalog to Photoshop Elements 4.0, the thumbnail cache isn't updated unless you erase the thumbnail cache file and rebuild it.
