Generic camera thumbnails still appear after you install Camera Raw 3.4 update (Adobe Bridge 1.0)

Issue

Generic camera thumbnails still appear for supported camera raw file formats (that is, thumbnails for newly supported cameras don't appear) in Adobe Bridge after you install the Camera Raw 3.4 update.

Details

You installed the plug-in to the Photoshop Only Plug-ins folder.

You didn't purge the Central Cache to the common CS2 Plug-ins folder after you installed the plug-in.

Solutions

Do one or more of the following solutions:

Solution 1: Install Adobe Bridge 1.0.4.

The Adobe Bridge 1.0.4 update is available from the Adobe website at www.adobe.com/downloads .

Solution 2: Purge the Central Cache Manually.
  1. Start Bridge.
  2. Choose Edit > Preferences > Advanced (Windows) or Bridge > Preferences > Advanced (Mac OS).
  3. Note the path listed in the Centralized Cache Location section. Close Bridge.
  4. Navigate to that location, and delete the Cache folder.
    • On Mac OS, the default location is the Users/[Username]/Library/Caches/Adobe/Bridge folder. Delete the Cache folder.
    • On Windows, the default location is the Documents and Settings\[Username]\Application Data\Adobe\Bridge folder. Delete the Cache folder.

Note: In Windows, turn on Hidden files to see this location:

  1. In Windows Explorer, choose Tools > Folder Options.
  2. Click the View tab in the Folder Options dialog box.
  3. In Advanced Settings, select Show Hidden Files and Folders.
  4. Deselect Hide Extensions for Known File Types.
  5. Click OK.

Important: Purging the Central Cache deletes cached thumbnail information for all folders. It also deletes labels, ratings and rotation settings for read-only files (for example, files on a CD or locked files) or file formats that don't have XMP support.

Solution 3: Install the Camera Raw plug-in in the common CS2 plug-ins folder and then purge the Central Cache.

On Windows:

  1. Quit Photoshop CS2 and Bridge.
  2. Open My Computer.
  3. Navigate to Program Files/Common Files/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS2/File Formats.
  4. Move the existing Camera Raw.8bi plug-in file to a safe location (for example, a new folder on your desktop) in case you need to restore it.
  5. Copy the new Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw.8bi, from the download into the same folder as Step 3.
  6. Start Photoshop CS2 or Bridge.
  7. Choose Tools > Cache > Purge Central Cache.

On Mac OS X:

  1. Quit Photoshop CS2 and Bridge.
  2. Open the Finder.
  3. Navigate to Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS2/File Formats.
  4. Move the existing Camera Raw.plugin file to a safe location (for example, a new folder on your desktop) in case you need to restore it.
  5. Copy the new Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw, from the download into the same folder as in Step 3.
  6. Start Photoshop CS2 or Bridge.
  7. Choose Tools > Cache > Purge Central Cache.
Background information

Bridge 1.0-1.0.1 fails to detect newer versions of the Camera Raw plugin automatically. Bridge 1.0.2 - 1.0.4 re-creates the cache for folders when it detects a new Camera Raw plug-in, provided the plug-in is installed to the common CS2 Plug-ins folder (as per solution 3).

Purging the Central Cache forces Bridge 1.0 - 1.0.1 to recognize the Camera Raw 3.4 plug-in, including the new camera settings and options that it adds to Bridge.
