InDesign or InCopy CS2 stalls at startup at "Initializing the SING gaiji system..." message (Mac OS)
Issue
When you start Adobe InDesign CS2 or Adobe InCopy CS2, the application stalls at the message, "Initializing the SING gaiji system."
Details
InDesign or InCopy stalls for a very long time (up to 45 minutes) and then finishes starting or crashes.
Solutions
Do one or more of the following solutions:
Solution 1: Grant Read/Write access to the SING folder to everyone.
Browse to the SING folder in Library/Application Support/Adobe/ and set the ownership and permissions for Owner, Group and Others to Read & Write.
To change permissions do one or both of the following:
To change the permissions using the Mac OS interface:
1. Select the SING folder in Library/Application Support/Adobe folder.
2. Choose File > Get Info.
3. Click the triangle next to Ownership & Permissions.
4. Click the triangle next Details.
5. Click the lock icon, and then choose your user name from the Owner menu.
6. Select Read & Write for Owner, Group and Others and click Apply to enclosed items.
Note: In some instances changing the permissions with the Mac OS interface does not solve the issue. In this case, change the permissions using the command line.
To change the permissions using the command line:
1. Log in as Superuser or Root:
a. Open NetInfo Manager in Applications > Utilities.
b. Choose Security > Enable Root User and type in a password for the root account.
c. Choose Apple menu > Log Out.
d. In the Login window, type in Root name and password.
2. Open Terminal from Applications > Utilities.
3. Type chmod -R 777 "/Library/Application Support/Adobe/SING" folder and press Enter.
Solution 2: Delete the AssocCache and Datastore folders.
Browse to /Library/Application Support/Adobe/SING, select the AssocCache and Datastore folders, and drag them to the Trash. InDesign or InCopy recreates these folders when you restart.
Solution 3: Delete the SING folder, and then reinstall InDesign CS2 or InCopy CS2.
To reinstall InDesign or InCopy:
1. Insert the installation CD.
2. Double-click the CD application icon on the desktop.
3. Double-click the Install Adobe InDesign CS2 or InCopy CS2 file. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Note: InDesign and InCopy do not re-create the SING folder when you restart the application; the SING folder is re-created when you reinstall the application.
Background information
The SING folder is a supplemental support library. InDesign and InCopy CS2 write to this folder when they start. The permissions on the SING folder need to be Read & Write for everyone, so that all users have access to it.
If you were a beta user, the SING folder files may be out of date.
Renaming the SING folder to resolve this issue is only a temporary workaround. Renaming the SING folder does not affect any major functionality in InDesign or InCopy; however, it does effect the display and printing of glyphs used in Asian languages.
