PDFMaker is unavailable in a Microsoft Office application (Acrobat 6.x on Windows XP or 2000)Products affected
Issue
The PDFMaker (Convert to Adobe PDF) icons and the Acrobat menu are missing from one or more Microsoft OfficeXP, 2003, or 2000 applications on Windows XP or 2000.
Solutions
Do one or more of the following solutions:
Solution 1: Remove Adobe PDF from the Disabled Items list in the Microsoft Office 2003 application.
1. Open the Microsoft Office application (Word, Excel, Publisher).
2. Go to Help > About [applicationname].
3. Click Disabled Items.
4. Select Adobe PDF from the list and click Enable.
5. Quit the Microsoft Office application and then restart it.
Solution 2: Remove and reinstall Acrobat.
If you installed Adobe Acrobat 6.0 before you installed the Microsoft application or Microsoft Office, remove and then reinstall Acrobat.
Solution 3: Enable PDFMaker in the Toolbars menu.
Ensure that PDFMaker is available and selected in the Toolbars menu:
In Excel or PowerPoint, choose View > Toolbars:
-- If PDFMaker 6.0 is listed, make sure that it's selected.
-- If PDFMaker 6.0 isn't listed, do the following.
a. Choose Tools > Add-Ins.
b. Click Browse (Excel) or Add New (PowerPoint).
c. Navigate to the Program Files/Adobe/Acrobat 6.0/PDFMaker folder, and select PDFMaker.xla (Excel) or PDFMaker.ppa (PowerPoint), and click OK.
d. Click OK (Excel) or Close (PowerPoint) to close the Add-Ins dialog box.
e. Choose View > Toolbars, and make sure that PDFMaker 6.0 is selected.
In Word, choose View > Toolbars:
-- If PDFMaker 6.0 is listed, make sure that it's selected.
-- If PDFMaker 6.0 isn't listed, choose Tools > Templates & Add-Ins:
- If PDFMaker.dot is listed, make sure that it's selected, and then click OK.
- If PDFMaker.dot isn't listed, do the following:
a. Click Add.
b. Navigate to the Program Files/Adobe/Acrobat 6.0/PDFMaker folder, select PDFMaker.dot, and then click OK.
c. Click OK to close the Templates & Add-ins dialog box.
d. Choose View > Toolbars, and make sure that PDFMaker 6.0 is selected.
Solution 4: Replace the PDFMaker.dot file. (Word only)
Replace the PDFMaker.dot file in the Microsoft Startup folder:
1. Quit Word.
2. Rename the PDFMaker.dot file in the following folder (for example, to PDFMaker.old):
-- Windows XP: Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office 10/Startup
-- Windows 2000: Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office/Startup
3. Copy the PDFMaker.dot file in the Program Files/Adobe/Acrobat 6.0/PDFMaker folder.
4. Move the copy you created to the following folder:
-- Windows XP: Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office 10/Startup
-- Windows 2000: Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office/Startup
Solution 5: Enable trusted macros.(Excel or Word only)
If the Security Warning dialog box appears when you start Excel or Word, select Always Trust Macros From This Source, and then click Enable Macros.
Solution 6: Configure Excel or Word to trust all installed add-ins and templates.(Excel or Word only)
In Excel or Word, select Trust All Installed Add-ins and Templates in the Security dialog box, and then restart the application:
1. Choose Tools > Macro > Security.
2. Click the Trusted Sources tab, and select Trust All Installed Add-ins And Templates.
3. Click OK, and then restart Word or Excel.
Solution 7: Ensure that PDFMaker is enabled.
Make sure that PDFMaker is enabled in the Office application:
1. In the Office application, choose Help > About Microsoft [application name].
2. Click Disabled Items:
-- If PDFMaker (.ppa, .dot, or .xla) appears in the Disabled Items window, select the file, and click Enable.
-- If PDFMaker (.ppa, .dot, or .xla) doesn't appear in the Disabled Items window, click Close.
3. Click OK.
Solution 8: Manually remove and reinstall PDFMaker.
Restart the computer, and then remove and reinstall PDFMaker:
To remove PDFMaker 6.x from Office XP, delete the following items:
-- the Program Files/Adobe/Acrobat 6.0/PDFMaker folder
-- the PDFMaker.dot file from the Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office 10/Startup folder
-- the PDFMaker.xla file from the Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office 10/XLStart folder
-- the PDFMaker.xla file in Documents and Settings/[user name]/Application Data/Microsoft/Excel/XLSTART
To remove PDFMaker 6.x from Office 2000, delete the following items:
-- the Program Files/Adobe/Acrobat 6.0/PDFMaker folder
-- the PDFMaker.dot file from the Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office/Startup folder
-- the PDFMaker.xla file from the Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office/XLStart folder
-- the PDFMaker.xla file in Documents and Settings/[user name]/Application Data/Microsoft/Excel/XLSTART
To reinstall PDFMaker 6.x:
1. Exit from all applications, including those that run in the background.
2. Start the Acrobat installer.
3. Click Next in the Adobe Acrobat 6.x Setup dialog box.
4. In the Select Country dialog box, select the country you're in, and then click Next.
5. Click Accept to accept the license agreement.
6. Enter your name, organization, and serial number in the Customer Information dialog box.
7. Select Custom in the Adobe Acrobat 6.x Setup Type dialog box, and then click Next.
8. Click Create Adobe PDF.
9. Click Acrobat PDFMaker, select "This feature and all subfeatures will be installed on local hard drive," and then click Next.
10. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing PDFMaker.
Solution 9: Use Detect And Repair to remove and reinstall PDFMaker.
The Detect And Repair feature automatically identifies and reinstalls the Acrobat PDFMaker files.
1. Close all applications, including those that run in the background.
2. Start Acrobat.
3. Choose Help > Detect And Repair, and follow the on-screen instructions.
4. After the installation is complete, restart your computer.
Solution 10: Turn off Word as the e-mail editor in Microsoft Outlook. (Word only)
1. In Outlook, choose Tools > Options.
2. Click the Mail Format tab.
3. Deselect Use Microsoft Word To Edit E-mail Messages.
4. Click OK.
