If the file you want to convert to PDF using Create Adobe PDF Online is in an unsupported format--or if the file has a custom page size, contains linked graphics, or unsupported fonts--you can print the file to PostScript, and then submit the PostScript file to Create Adobe PDF Online. Before performing these tasks, you need to create a virtual printer that uses the Acrobat Distiller PPD file.
Downloading and installing the Acrobat Distiller PPD file
Before creating a virtual printer, download and install the Acrobat Distiller PPD file from the Adobe website. You'll configure a virtual printer to use the Acrobat Distiller PPD.
To download and install the Acrobat Distiller PPD file:
1. Visit the Adobe website at www.adobe.com/downloads/ .
2. Click Updates in the Adobe PostScript 3 section, and then click Mac.
3. Scroll to the PPD Files section, and click PPD Files: Adobe.
4. Click Download to begin the downloading process.
Note:Your browser version and configuration determine where downloaded files are stored on your hard disk and whether downloaded files are decompressed automatically. See the browser's documentation for additional information.
5. Double-click the downloaded Adobe.sit file to unstuff it. An Adobe folder is created on your desktop.
6. Open the Adobe folder on the desktop, and select Acrobat Distiller.
7. Choose Edit > Copy Acrobat Distiller.
8. Navigate to the Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj folder.
9. Choose Edit > Paste.
Creating a virtual printer
To configure your system to create a PostScript file, create a virtual printer that uses the Acrobat Distiller PPD file.
To create a virtual printer:
1. Choose Go > Applications in Mac OS X.
2. Open the Utilities folder, and double-click Print Center.
-- On Mac OS X v10.1.1-v10.3.9:
a. Click Add.
b. From the pop-up menu, choose IP Printing.
c. Type localhost in the LPR Printer Address text box.
d. Deselect Use Default Queue On Server, and then type AcrobatDistiller (no space) in the Queue Name text box.
e. Select the Acrobat Distiller PPD and finish installing the printer:
f. Choose Other from the Printer Model pop-up menu, and then navigate to Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj, and select Acrobat Distiller.
g. Click Add.
-- On Mac OS X v10.4.x:
a. Click +.
b. From the pop-up menu, choose Internet Printing Protocol - IPP.
c. Type localhost in the LPR Printer Address text box.
d. Type AcrobatDistiller (no space) in the Name text box.
e. Type AcrobatDistiller (no space) in the Queue Name text box.
f. Choose Other from the Print Using pop-up menu, and then navigate to Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj, and select Acrobat Distiller.
g. Click Open and then click Add.
Creating a PostScript file
After setting up a virtual printer, you can create a PostScript file, which you can submit to Create Adobe PDF Online for conversion to PDF.
To create a PostScript file:
1. Open the document that you would like to convert to PostScript.
2. Choose File > Print.
3. From the Printer pop-up menu, choose AcrobatDistiller_on_localhost.
4. Save the file as a Postrcript file:
-- On Mac OS 10.1.1-10.3.9
a. Choose Output Options from the pop-up menu.
b. Select Save as File, and choose PostScript from the Format pop-up menu.
c. Click Save.
-- On Mac OS 10.4.x
a. Click the Save PDF button.
b. Click Save PDF As PostScript.
5. In the Save As text box, enter a name for the file.
6. From the Where pop-up menu, choose a location for the saved file. Click Save.
