What to do if you encounter an internal error

Adobe FrameMaker may return an internal error if it encounters a conflict, such as a corrupt document or object, incompatible hardware, or an outdated driver.

FrameMaker internal error numbers

If an internal error occurs, FrameMaker 5.5.3 or later returns an error message similar to the following: "Internal Error 6003, 3333333, 2222222, 1111111.FrameMaker has detected a serious problem and must quit . . ."

The first three digits of an internal error number indicate the FrameMaker version; the fourth digit indicates the platform.

First Three Digits FrameMaker Version
556 5.5.6
600 6.0
700 7.0
Fourth Digit Platform
1 Mac OS/68000
2 Mac OS/PowerPC
3 UNIX
4 Microsoft Windows

For example:

-- Internal error 5564 indicates that the error occurred in FrameMaker 5.5.6 for Windows.

-- Internal error 6002 indicates that the error occurred in FrameMaker 6.0 for Mac OS (Power PC).

-- Internal error 7003 indicates that the error occurred in FrameMaker 7.0 for UNIX.

The last three sets of numbers in an internal error (for example., 3333333, 2222222, 1111111) relate to the last three internal functions FrameMaker performed before it encountered the conflict. Because these numbers are specific to the platform, operating system, and FrameMaker version, one cause of a crashcan produce different internal error numbers. For example, a corrupt table row in a Maker Interchange Format (MIF) file generates the following error numbers on each platform:

-- FrameMaker for UNIX

Internal Error 7003, 1429100, 4222668, 4224204

-- FrameMaker for Windows

Internal Error 7004, 4764329, 4772288, 7065324

-- FrameMaker for Mac OS

Internal Error 7002, 3790796, 3412964, 3364812

The FrameLog file

When an internal error occurs, FrameMaker generates a FrameLog file. The FrameLog filename indicates the date and time at which FrameMaker encountered the error. In Windows and Mac OS, the FrameLog file is in the folder where FrameMaker is installed. In UNIX, the FrameLog file is in the /var/tmp directory.

The content of the FrameLog file can help FrameMaker engineers troubleshoot the cause of consistent crashes and improve the product for future releases.
