Error "This program requires administrative privileges ..." occurs when you install FrameMaker 7.0 (Windows)

Issue

When you install Adobe FrameMaker 7.0, it returns the following error: "This program requires administrative privileges to run. Please login as an Administrator or member of the Administrator group and then run setup.exe."

Solution: Log in as an administrator or member of the Administrators group.

To determine whether your Windows user accountallows you to log in with administratorrights:

-- Windows 2000 or XP:

1. Right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, and choose Manage from the pop-up menu.

2. In the left pane, expand System Tools, and then click Local Users and Groups.

3. In the right pane, double-click Groups.

4. Double-click Administrators (or Power User if you use Acrobat eBook Reader or Acrobat Capture). If your account has administrator rights, it appears in the Members section.

-- Windows NT:

1. Choose Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > User Manager.

2. In the Groups section, double-click Administrator. If your account has administrator rights, it appears in the Members list.

Note: If the account you are logged into doesn't have administrator rights, Windows may return the error "The following error occurred accessing the properties of the local group Administrators: Access is denied. The local group properties cannot be edited or viewed at this time." Contact your system administrator for assistance.

Background information

In Windows XP, 2000, or NT 4.0 you must be logged in with local (that is, machine) administrator rights to install Adobe FrameMaker (including Acrobat Distiller as bundled with FrameMaker) and associated components. You don't need to be logged in as an administrator in Windows to run Acrobat applications; you can be logged in with User rights. If your Windows user account doesn't allow you to log in with the required rights, contact your system administrator.

The setup.exe file determines if the current user has administrator privileges and, if so, launches the Adobe FrameMaker 7.0 launch.exe installer file. If you try to launch the Adobe FrameMaker 7.0 launch.exe installer without administrator privileges, you will receive error messages that registry keys could not be registered.
