Certain items, including menu items and fonts, are different in Adobe FrameMaker 6.0 than in FrameMaker 5.5.x. These differences are listed below.

Book commands

Because FrameMaker 6.0 has enhanced book management, some book commands are different than in FrameMaker 5.5.x.

Book commands in FrameMaker 5.5.x Book commands in FrameMaker 6.0
File > Generate/Update Edit > Update Book
File > Setup File Format > Document > Numbering

Chapter numbering and volume numbering

In FrameMaker 5.5.x, you can use the Setup File dialog box to prefix page numbers. In FrameMaker 6.0, you use the building blocks <$chapnum> and <$volnum> to prefix page numbers. When you open a FrameMaker 5.5.x document in FrameMaker 6.0, an alert appears with the option to update prefixes to use the new building blocks. You must manually update cross-references, reference pages, and so on. For more information, refer to document 310142 , "Incorrect Chapter Numbers in a FrameMaker 5.5.x Book Opened in FrameMaker 6.0 or Later."

Fonts

Unlike FrameMaker 5.5.x, FrameMaker 6.0 does not include Times, Courier, and Helvetica fonts. If you open documents that use those fonts, FrameMaker 6.0 returns an "Unavailable Fonts" alert. However, if you've installed Adobe Acrobat 3.0, which FrameMaker 5.5.x includes, you can use Adobe Type Manager (ATM) to install those fonts; they are included with Acrobat 3.0.

For a list of fonts included with FrameMaker 6.0, refer to document 325333 , "Included fonts (FrameMaker 6.0-7.1)."

Help system

The Help system in FrameMaker 6.0 is a *.hlp file, providing enhanced detail and searching capability. In FrameMaker 5.5.x, the Help system consists of FrameMaker files that use FrameMaker hypertext for navigation.

Location of online manuals, samples, and clip art

In FrameMaker 6.0, the online manuals, samples, and clip art are in subfolders within the folder in which FrameMaker is installed. The online manuals are in Portable Document Format (PDF) for viewing in Adobe Acrobat.

In FrameMaker 5.5.x, the online manuals, samples, and clip art are accessible from the Help menu as well as the folder in which FrameMaker is installed. The online manuals are in FrameMaker (*.fm) format for viewing in FrameMaker.

Note: Updates to the online manuals are available on the Adobe website at www.adobe.com/support/downloads/ .

Acrobat

FrameMaker 5.5.x includes Acrobat 3.0; FrameMaker 6.0 includes Acrobat Distiller 4.0.

If you install Acrobat Distiller 4.0 in Windows, with Acrobat 3.0 already installed, Distiller behaves unexpectedly because some Acrobat 3.0 registry entries are the same as those for Acrobat Distiller 4.0. To avoid this issue, remove Acrobat 3.0 before installing Acrobat Distiller 4.0. To view PDF files, use Acrobat Reader, which you can download from the Adobe website at www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readermain.html .
