JPEG not available in Save As format menu (Photoshop CS2, CS3)

Issue


When you choose File > Save As in Adobe Photoshop CS2 or CS3, JPEG is not an available format.

Reason


Any of the following are true of the image you are trying to save:

  • Its bit depth is 16 or 32 bits per channel.
  • Its color mode is bitmap, duotone, indexed, Lab, or Multichannel.
  • Its width or height exceeds 30,000 pixels.
  • Its file size is greater than 2 GB.

Solution


Do one or more of the following solutions:

Solution 1: Change the image bit depth to 8 bits per channel.
  1. Choose Image > Mode > 8 Bits/Channel.
  2. Choose File > Save As, and save the image as a JPEG file.
Solution 2: Change the image color mode to RGB, grayscale, or CMYK.
  1. Do one of the following:

    • Choose Image > Mode > RBG Color
    • Choose Image > Mode > Grayscale.
    • Choose Image > Mode > CMYK.
  2. Choose File > Save As, and save the image as a JPEG file.
Solution 3: Resize the image to within 30,000 by 30,000 pixels, or so that its size is less than 2 GB.
  1. Resize the image so that neither its width nor height exceeds 30,000 pixels, or the file size is less than 2 GB. For instructions on resizing an image, see Change Pixel Dimensions of an Image in Photoshop CS3 Help.
  2. Choose File > Save As, and save the image as a JPEG file.

Additional Information


The JPEG file format is limited to 8 bits per channel and a 2 GB file size.

Photoshop CS2 and CS3 limit JPEG files to 30,000 by 30,000 pixels.
