Error "Adobe Premiere Elements could not find any valid editing modes..."

Issue

When you attempt to start Adobe Premiere Elements, it returns the error message, "Adobe Premiere Elements could not find any valid editing modes. Please reinstall Premiere Elements and try starting again."

Solutions

Do one of the following solutions:

Solution1: Upgrade to Premiere Elements 2.0.

You can purchase upgrades from Adobe Authorized Resellers and from Adobe directly:

-- To locate an Authorized Reseller, visit the Adobe website at http://partners.adobe.com/resellerfinder/na/findreseller.jsp .

-- To purchase an upgrade from Adobe, visit the Adobe store athttp://store.adobe.com/store/ , choose Video and Audio under Find Products By Department, and then choose Premiere Elements 2.0.

Solution 2: Correct the codec registration problem by modifying the Windows registry.

An extra space at the beginning of Value Data for a codec in the Windows registry causes the codec to be listed incorrectly with Windows XP.

To correct the codec registration problem:

1. Choose Start > Run.

2. Type regedit in the Open text box, and then click OK to start the Windows Registry Editor.

3. Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32.

4. Locate the incorrectly registered codec. (Typically, this is the vidc.draw listing).

5. Select the codec entry that you wish to correct by double-clicking the entry to open the Edit String dialog box.

6. Delete the space character at the beginning of the Value data field to correct the entry.

7. Click OK to close the Edit String window.

8. Repeat steps 4 through 6 until you have corrected all incorrectly installed codecs.

9. Close the Registry Editor dialog box.
