Title

FrameMaker Cannot Find Document Referenced in Hypertext LinkProducts affected

 Issue

When you click a hypertext link that should open another document, FrameMaker returns the message: “Cannot find the document named [filename]. Make sure that the file exists” or when you edit a hypertext command with the “Validate Command upon Insertion” option enabled, FrameMaker returns the message: “[filename] was not found. Make sure the file exists and is a FrameMaker document.”

Solution

Edit the hypertext command to include the complete name of the destination file, including the extension it has. If the destination file is in a different folder from the active file, include the path name. For example, a “Jump to Named Destination” command should reflect the following structure of one of the following:

If you are using an absolute path on a Windows 2000 or XP machine:

gotolink c:/Documents and Settings/[username]/Desktop/myotherfile.fm:[linkname]

If you are using a relative path:

gotolink [folder name]/myotherfile.fm:[linkname]

Note: On Windows systems, absolute path names start with a drive letter; Relative path names start with the name of a folder. Each folder level is separated with a slash (/) since FrameMaker reserves the backslash character to define special character sequences.

Note: For unmapped network drives connected to servers that use the Universal Naming Conversion (UNC), two backslashes are normally required at the start of the path name. In order for FrameMaker to properly interpret the required backslashes, the backslash characters need to be backslashed. For an example of the required structure to open a file stored in a share name location, see the following:

gotolink \\\\server name/[folder name]/filename.fm:[linkname]

Additional Information

When setting up hypertext commands, you must include the filename with the file extension for FrameMaker to locate the file. Similarly, if the file is in another folder, you must include the path to the linked file. Without a path, FrameMaker will assume that the linked file is in the same folder as the open file. For more information on using hypertext in FrameMaker documents, see: "Inserting Hypertext Commands" in FrameMaker Help Topics.
