Opening FrameMaker Documents in an Earlier Version of FrameMaker

To open an Adobe FrameMaker document in a version of FrameMaker earlier than the version used to create the document, obtain a copy of the document saved as MIF (Maker Interchange Format). Then open the *.mif file in FrameMaker, and save it as a *.fm file. Features not available in the earlier version, however, are lost.

Alternatively, if the document was created in FrameMaker 7.0 and you use FrameMaker 6.0, obtain a copy of the document saved in FrameMaker 6.0 format.

If you try to open a document that was created in a newer version, FrameMaker returns the alert "Although [filename] appears to be a FrameMaker file, it can't be opened with this release of the product."
