Issue

When you type single smart French quotation marks in Adobe FrameMaker 5.5.6, they appear as English quotation marks ( ). In FrameMaker 5.5.3 and earlier, both single and double smart French quotation marks appear as English quotation marks ( and , respectively).

Solutions

Do one of the following:

Solution 1

If you are using FrameMaker for Windows, modify the SmartQuotes statement in the Maker.ini file in the FrameMaker installation folder. For instructions, see the on-line manual, "Customizing FrameMaker Products."

Solution 2

If you are using FrameMaker for Mac OS, use a resource editor to modify the SmartQuote settings, which are stored in compiled module files for each User Interface Language:

Disclaimer: Adobe Systems does not support resource editing utilities and provides the following procedure only as a guideline. Before attempting it, you should have experience using a resource editing utility because incorrect changes may seriously damage a file. For instructions or support, see the utility's documentation or contact the manufacturer. You should modify a backup copy of the file so that you can revert to the original if problems occur.

Note: You can obtain the values of French smart quotation marks (used in steps 6 and 7) in the on-line manual, "FrameMaker Character Sets" (FrameMaker 5.5.x) or the FrameMaker Quick Reference Guide (FrameMaker 5).

1. Quit FrameMaker.

2. In the Modules folder in the FrameMaker installation folder, locate the interface file you are using. For example:

DESchnittstellendatei (German)

FRInterface (French)

US EnglishInterface (US English)

3. Open the interface file in a resource editor such as ResEdit.

4. Open the SOPT Resource Component Group, by double-clicking SOPT.

5. Open SOPT resource ID#256.

6. Change the first character to the desired character for the Single Left Smart Quote. For example, change DC to D4.

7. Change the second character to the desired character for the Single Right Smart Quote. For example, change DD to D5.

8. Quit the resource editor, saving changes to the interface file.

9. Start FrameMaker.

10. Choose File > Preferences, then choose your interface from the Interface pop-up menu. Click Set.

Solution 3

If you are using FrameMaker for UNIX, modify the Maker.smartQuotes statement in any of the resource files. For instructions, see the "Using international quotation marks" section of the on-line manual, "Customizing FrameMaker Products."

Solution 4

Type the key sequence for smart French quotation marks. Instructions are in the on-line manual, "FrameMaker Character Sets" (FrameMaker 5.5.x) or the FrameMaker Quick Reference Guide (FrameMaker 5).

Additional Information

FrameMaker 5.5.3 and earlier has English settings for single and double French smart quotation marks: quoteleft (), quoteright (), quotedblleft (), and quotedblright (). FrameMaker 5.5.6 has correct settings for French double smart quotation marks -- guillemotleft () and guillemotright () -- but single smart French quotation marks are set to quilsinglleft () and quilsinglright ().

In addition to changing French smart quotation marks, you can use the methods described above to change other smart quotation marks. For example, you can change the German interface to have English smart quotation marks.
