Error: "Unknown Recorder error" when you try to capture video (Adobe Premiere Elements, Adobe Premiere Pro 1.x)

Issue

When you try to capture video in Adobe Premiere Pro 1.x or Adobe Premiere Elements, the application returns the error message, "Unknown Recorder error".

Details

Your system has AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core processors.

Solution

Do both of the following solutions:

Solution 1: Upgrade to Premiere Elements 3.0.
To purchase an upgrade from Adobe, visit the Adobe Store at http://store.adobe.com/store/, click Video and Audio, and choose Adobe Premiere Elements.
Solution 2: Change the affinity setting for the Adobe Premiere Elements.exe or Adobe Premiere Pro.exe process to use only one CPU.

To change the affinity setting:

  1. Start Premiere Elements or Premiere Pro.
  2. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and then click Task Manager.
  3. Click the Processes tab.
  4. Right-click the process Adobe Premiere Elements.exe (or Adobe Premiere Pro.exe), and then choose Set Affinity.
  5. Deselect all CPUs except the first CPU listed (CPU 0), and then click OK.
  6. Quit the Task Manager.
Additional information

Changing the affinity setting so Premiere Elements only uses one CPU is a work around that must be done each time you start Premiere Elements; when you quit the application, the affinity setting returns to the default setting.
