General Info fields are blank in a PDF file saved from FrameMaker 5.5.6

Issue

General Info fields are blank in an Adobe PDF file created from an Adobe FrameMaker 5.5.6 document.

Detail

The FrameMaker document has a text frame with PostScript code that contains DOCINFO pdfmark commands.

Solutions

Do one of the following:

Solution 1: Install the latest version of FrameMaker and use the PDF Setup dialog box to specify document information.

Upgrade to the latest version of FrameMaker and use the PDF Setup dialog box to specify the document information. Read the instructions in the "Adding PDF document information" section of the Adobe FrameMaker User Guide. For upgrade information, visit the Adobe website at http://store.adobe.com/store/products/master.jhtml?id=catFrameMaker .

Solution 2: Complete the General Info fields using Adobe Acrobat Exchange.

Open the PDF file in Adobe Acrobat Exchange, choose File > Document Info > General, and then complete the General Info fields.

Solution 3: Print the document to a file with Generate Acrobat Data deselected, and then distill the PostScript file.

In Windows or Mac OS, print the FrameMaker document to file with Generate Acrobat Data deselected, and then distill the PostScript file:

Note: If you deselect Generate Acrobat Data, the PostScript file won't include hypertext links.

1. In the FrameMaker document, choose File > Print.

2. Select Print Only to File and deselect Generate Acrobat Data in the Print Document dialog box.

3. Click Print. FrameMaker creates a PostScript file.

4. Start Adobe Acrobat Distiller.

5. Choose File > Open.

6. Navigate to the PostScript file and click Open. Distiller creates a PDF file from the PostScript file.

Solution 4: Add the pdfmark commands to the Epilogue.ps and Prologue.ps files.

Add the pdfmark commands to the Epilogue.ps and Prologue.ps files. Commands in these two files override pdfmark commands in the PostScript file.

Background information

DOCINFO pdfmark commands indicate information that should appear in the General Info dialog box of a PDF file.

When you save a document as PDF, FrameMaker 5.5.6 creates a temporary PostScript file with pdfmark commands at the beginning of the file. The Generate Acrobat Data option, which is selected by default when you save a document as PDF, causes FrameMaker to generate the pdfmark commands. FrameMaker then invokes Acrobat Distiller to distill the PostScript file, converting it to PDF. When distilling the PostScript file, Acrobat Distiller reads the first DOCINFO pdfmark commands and ignores others. If the FrameMaker document contains additional DOCINFO pdfmark commands -- such as in a text frame that contains PostScript code -- Distiller ignores them.

If you print to file and then distill the Post Script file in Acrobat Distiller, you can deselect Generate Acrobat Data so FrameMaker doesn't generate DOCINFO pdfmark commands.
