EPS File Appears as Gray Box in FrameMaker

Issue

An imported EPS file appears as a gray box in an Adobe FrameMaker document, but it prints correctly to a PostScript printer and appears correct when exported to PDF.

Detail

The EPS file was saved with no preview.

Solution

Save the EPS file with a 1-bit or 8-bit TIFF preview, and then reimport the EPS file into FrameMaker.

Additional Information

An image preview (usually in TIFF or PICT format) is used for on-screen display and is different from the image printed to a PostScript printer. A low resolution preview, especially 1-bit, may appear grainy on-screen, although the image prints correctly to a PostScript printer.

UNIX systems with Display PostScript (DPS) can display previews that have alpha channels.
