How Bookmarks Are Arranged in PDF Files Created from FrameMaker Documents

When you convert an Adobe FrameMaker document to PDF, you specify in the Acrobat Setup dialog box which paragraph tags will become bookmarks. You can specify each paragraph tag's level in the bookmark hierarchy by selecting the tag in the Acrobat Setup dialog box and then clicking the Bookmark Level arrows.

Paragraph tags you set up in a bookmark level with no indentation will be parent bookmarks. Parent bookmarks are top-level bookmarks that can contain additional bookmarks. A parent bookmark can be identified in a PDF file by a twisty (triangle) to its left.

Paragraph tags you set up in a bookmark level with one or more levels of indentation will be child bookmarks. Child bookmarks are subordinate to parent bookmarks. If a parent bookmark's view is collapsed, you can view its child bookmarks by clicking the parent bookmark's twisty.

Whether bookmarks are expanded or collapsed when you open the resulting PDF file in an Adobe Acrobat viewer depends on how many there are: If the total number of bookmarks is more than 25, they will be collapsed.
