Error "Fatal error 00000001..." when you start FrameMaker 7.x for Windows
Issue
When starting, Adobe FrameMaker 7.x for Windows returns one of the following errors messages:
-- "Fatal Error (00000001) occurred while initializing FrameMaker. module: core"
-- "Fatal Error (00000001) occurred while initializing FrameMaker. module: thunk."
Solutions
Do one or more of the following solutions:
Solution 1: Recreate the user profile maker.ini, pdfsize.ini, and user.dct.
1. Choose Start > Run and type %appdata%\Adobe\FrameMaker in the Open text box. Click OK.
2. Double-click your version (for example, 7.0, 7.1 or 7.2).
3. Right-click maker.ini, pdfsize.ini, and user.dct, and rename them maker.old, pdfsize.old and user.old, respectively.
4. Start FrameMaker 7.x
Solution 2: Set temp directory permissions properly.
For Windows 2000:
1. Double-clickMy Computer.
2. Choose Tools > Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
3. Select Show Hidden Files And Folders and then click OK.
4. ChooseStart > Run and type %USERPROFILE% in the Open text box.Click OK.
5. Double-clickLocal Settings.
6. Right-clickTemp and select Properties.
7. Click the Security tab:
-- Make certain that Everyone is listed
-- Make certain that Permission for security is set to Full Control
For Windows XP Home:
1. Restart insafe mode.
a. Restart Windows and Press F8when you see a message such as "For Advanced Startup Options..."
b. Select Safe Mode from the list of startup options.
c. Safe Mode should appear in each corner of the desktop. If Safe Mode does appear in each corner of the desktop, then log into the local machine using your account.
e. If a dialog box indicates that Windows is running in Safe Mode, then click OK.
2. Choose Start > My Computer.
3. Choose Tools > Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
4. SelectShow Hidden Files And Folders, and click OK.
5. Choose Start > Run and type %USERPROFILE% in the Open text box. Click OK.
6. Double-clickLocal Settings.
7. Right-click Temp and select Properties
8. Clickthe Security tab:
-- Make certain that Everyone is listed
-- Make certain that Permission for security is set to Full Control
For Windows XP Professional:
1. Choose Start > My Computer.
2. Choose Tools > Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
3. SelectShow Hidden Files And Folders, and click OK.
4. In the Advanced Settings, deselect Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended), and click OK.
5. Choose Start > Run and type %USERPROFILE% in the Open text box. Click OK.
6. Double-clickLocal Settings.
7. Right-clickTemp and select Properties
8. Clickthe Security tab:
-- Make certain that Everyone is listed
-- Make certain that Permission for security is set to Full Control
Set permissions manually from the Windows command line (all version of Windows):
1. Choose Start > Run and type cmd in the Open text box. Click OK.
2. Use the following commands:
c:
cd "\<parent of the directory contained within the error>"
cacls "temp" /T /E /C /G Everyone:F
exit
Note: Include quotation marks and press Return at the end of each line. Make sure to enter spaces between /T, /E, /C and /G in the third line.
Background information
Like most applications, FrameMaker needsread-write access to the system temp directory. FrameMaker may also have trouble starting if the user configuration files are corrupted or if they includeincorrect settings.
