Small Page Sizes in PDF Files Created from FrameMaker 5.1.2 Documents in Windows

Issue

A PDF file created from an Adobe FrameMaker 5.1.2 for Windows document has a smaller page size than the document (e.g., 4.25"x5.5" instead of 8.5"x11").

Solutions

Do one of the following:

Solution 1

Use FrameMaker 5.5.6 or later. For information on upgrading to the current version, visit Adobe's Web site at www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/main.html .

Solution 2

Modify the FrameMaker PostScript prologue file, header.ps, and then re-create the PDF file:

1. Exit from FrameMaker.

2. Make a backup copy of the header.ps file, which is in the \fminit folder.

3. Open the original header.ps file in a text editor that can save in text-only format (e.g., Notepad or WordPad).

4. Find the line that starts with "/FmDC."

5. Edit the line to read

/FmDC {transform FmX defaultmatrix itransform cvi exch cvi exch} def

6. Save the file in text-only format.

7. Re-create and then distill the PostScript file.

Solution 3

Use a different PPD file to print the document to PostScript (e.g., a PPD file for an Apple LaserWriter).

Additional Information

A conflict between FrameMaker 5.1.2 and the most recent PPD file for Acrobat Distiller 3.x (Adistill.ppd, dated 10/30/96) causes PostScript files created from FrameMaker documents to have the incorrect page size information.
