How to Change the Default Font FrameMaker Uses in Font Substitutions (Windows)
If an Adobe FrameMaker document contains fonts that are unavailable to Windows, FrameMaker returns an "Unavailable Fonts" message. If you click OK, FrameMaker then substitutes the fonts, based on the Default Font settings in the Maker.ini file. You can change these settings by modifying the Maker.ini file. Instructions appear at the end of this document.
The default font settings in the Maker.ini file are as follows:
DefaultSize=12
DefaultFamily=Times, Times New Roman, Tms Rmn
DefaultAngle=Regular
DefaultVariation=Regular
DefaultWeight=Regular
MathFamily=Symbol
You can change any of these settings, allowing FrameMaker to use a different font or font characteristic. (If you change a setting, make sure that the font is installed on your system.) For example, if you change the DefaultFamily statement from
DefaultFamily=Times, Times New Roman, Tms Rmn
to
DefaultFamily=Arial, Times New Roman, Tms Rmn
FrameMaker sets the default font to Arial and substitutes most variations of unavailable fonts with Arial. It uses the other entries (Times New Roman and Tms Rmn) if Arial is unavailable.
Note: You can find out which angle, variation, and weight of a font are available by looking in your Fonts folder, in ATM, or in the pop-up menus on the Default Font tab of FrameMaker's Paragraph Designer.
To change the default font settings:
1. Exit from FrameMaker and make a backup copy of the Maker.ini file, which is in the FrameMaker installation folder. (You can revert to the backup later should problems occur.)
2. Open the original Maker.ini file in a text editor that can save in text-only format (e.g., WordPad).
3. Make the desired modifications.
4. Close the Maker.ini file, saving it in text-only format.
5. Restart FrameMaker.
