Multiple Red Separations in FrameMaker 4 to 5.1.2

Issue

Red is listed multiple times in the Print as Spot column of the Set Print Separations dialog box in FrameMaker 4 to 5.1.2.

Details

The multiple Red listings reappear after you move them to the Don't Print column and then close and reopen the dialog box. (The exception is FrameMaker's default Red -- 100% Magenta 100% Yellow.)

If you try to delete Red from the Color Definitions dialog box, FrameMaker returns the message, "Cannot Change or Delete the Color Red."

Solutions

Do one or more of the following solutions:

Solution 1: Use FrameMaker 5.5 or later.

For information on upgrading to the current version, visit the Adobe website at http://store.adobe.com/store/products/master.jhtml?id=catFrameMaker .

Solution 2: Prevent blank sheets from printing.

To prevent blank sheets from printing:

-- In Mac OS and Windows, select Skip Blank Pages in the Print dialog box.

-- In UNIX, select Skip Blank Separation Pages in the Set Print Separations dialog box.

Solution 3: Remove the unwanted Red separations.

1. In FrameMaker, choose File > Save As and then save the document in MIF.

2. Close the MIF file and then open it in a text editor that can save in text-only format.

3. Search for the Red color definition, <ColorTag 'Red'>. You should find multiple similar but different definitions. For example, one definition might list "Red" while another lists "red" (difference in case).

4. Leave the first definition, but delete each additional definition, beginning with "<Color" and ending with "> # end of Color."

5. Close the file, saving it as text-only but with the *.mif extension.

6. Close the file and then reopen it in FrameMaker.

Background information

Importing a graphic in which the color Red is defined other than 100% Magenta 100% Yellow introduces additional definitions of Red to your document.
