How to change file associations (Windows XP, 2000)
When you install an application in Windows, the application's installer usually associates the application with the file formats commonly used by that application. A file in a format that's associated with an application then appears with that application's file icon. When you double-click the file, the application automatically starts and opens the file.
For example, when you install Adobe Photoshop in Windows XP, the Photoshop installer associates Photoshop with image file formats, such as TIFF and JPEG. If you later install another application that commonly uses the TIFF or JPEG file format, files in those formats may then be associated with the new application. To change the association back to Photoshop or to a different application, reinstall Photoshop or the application with which you want the files to be associated.
You can also manually associate a file format with an application.
To manually associate a file format with an application:
- In Windows Explorer, right-click a file whose file association you want to change. For example, if you want to change the file association for all TIFF files, click a TIFF file.
- Choose Open With > Choose Program (Windows XP) or Open With (Windows 2000) from the pop-up menu.
- In the Open With dialog box, select the application with which you want to associate the file format. If the application isn't listed, click Browse (Windows XP) or Other (Windows 2000), and then locate and select the desired application.
- Select "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" (Windows XP) or "Always use this program to open files of this type" (Windows 2000), and click OK.
Note: If you choose a program from the Open With menu in step 2, instead of selecting the Choose Program option, this check box is not available, and the file association won't work.
