How to Prevent Users from Unlocking a Locked FrameMaker Document

To disable !Flk so that users cannot unlock an Adobe FrameMaker document after you have locked it, use the MIF statement <DViewOnlyNoOp \0xF00 >:

1. Save the FrameMaker document as MIF.

2. Open the MIF file in a text editor (e.g., SimpleText, WordPad, or vi).

3. Search for the statement <DViewOnly No > and then change it to

<DViewOnly Yes ><DViewOnlyNoOp \0xF00 >.

4. Save the MIF file.

The file is locked when opened in FrameMaker. However, the document read from the disk by FrameMaker is still in ASCII formatand can therefore be unlocked by someone with write permissions to the MIF file by reversing the change in step 3 above.

If you need a document that cannot be unlocked by anyone, in FrameMaker or otherwise, you can change the statement in step 3 above to <DViewOnly No ><DViewOnlyNoOp \0xF00 >, open the edited MIF file in FrameMaker, and save the file in View Only format. The following message appears:

This file cannot be opened for editing after you save it in View-Only format. Save a backup file in Normal (editable) format? Yes No Cancel

If you select Yes, the file is immediately locked and cannot be unlocked. The file is saved in binary format to disk, and cannot be restored to an editable state.

Important Note: Adobe Systems has no procedure for unlocking such a document. If the Copy command is still available for the document (i.e., it has not been rendered inoperative by another "<DViewOnlyNoOp...>" statement), the contents of the document can be pasted into another document.

Adobe Systems takes no responsibility for the safety or security of documents protected as described above, nor does it take responsibility for information rendered inaccessible by these means.
