General Information
The following information describes settings that are changed when files created in Japanese FrameMaker 2.1 (JFM 2.1) and Japanese FrameMaker 3 (JFM 3) are opened in FrameMaker 5.5. It also lists the functions that are not supported by FrameMaker 5.5. See the manual provided with FrameMaker 5.5 for detailed information on the individual functions.
The information contained here is the English translation of the Release Notes shipped with Japanese FrameMaker 5.5.
Opening JFM 2.1 and JFM 3 documents in FrameMaker 5.5
JFM 2.1 and JFM 3 documents should be saved in MIF format before being opened in FrameMaker 5.5. JFM 2.1 and JFM 3 documents in the default binary format are not supported by FrameMaker 5.5.
Fonts
JFM 2.1: The fonts used in JFM 2.1 will be created directly as combined fonts in FrameMaker 5.5. If Baseline and Font Size have been selected in the paragraph format Extension panel, the specified values will be set by FrameMaker 5.5 under the Size and Offset values of each combined font.
JFM 3: FrameMaker 5.5 will create combined fonts based on the combination of settings specified under Japanese Font Default and Western Font Default for paragraph format and character format. The baseline (Kisen) setting under Japanese Font Default for paragraph format will be set under Baseline in FrameMaker 5.5. The Size value to be set for a combined font will be determined from the size settings specified under Japanese Font Default and Western Font Default. For example, if the Japanese Font Default setting is 12 pt and the Western Font Default setting is 24 pt, the Size value of the combined font to be created will be 200%. Settings for types, color, and other style settings will be taken from the settings under Japanese Font Default.
JFM 3: The settings in Modify Characters under character format will be moved to FrameMaker 5.5 as follows.
Character shape change: This value is set under Character Width.
Shading and outlining: These values are set under Shadow and Outline (for Mac version only).
Dotted attribute (Kenten), boxed text (Kakoiwaku), mirror image (Kyozo): These settings are not supported.
Special-Punctuation Character Handling Tables
JFM 2.1: Customized settings made using the Special-Punctuation Character Handling Tables (Kinsoku Table and Yakumono Table) will be moved to the initial settings in FrameMaker 5.5.
JFM 2.1: FrameMaker 5.5 does not support EFM files.
JFM 3: The settings in the Japanese Punctuation Characters (Yakumono) panel under paragraph format and the settings under the Special Character Handling (Kinsoku Shori) option in the Special Character Handling (Kinsoku) panel will be moved to the initial settings in FrameMaker 5.5. The values set under Basic Japanese Punctuation Characters (Yakumono Kihon-gumi) Set will be moved to the corresponding settings under the Dots (Kutoten) option in the Japanese panel under paragraph format in FrameMaker 5.5.
Rubi size and other settings are made for each rubi in JFM 2.1 and JFM 3
In FrameMaker 5.5 these settings cover the entire document. When a JFM 2.1 document or JFM 3 document is opened in FrameMaker 5.5, the size setting of the last rubi in the document is used as the rubi setting for the entire document. Other settings are moved to the initial settings in FrameMaker 5.5.
Vertical Character Flow
Documents set to vertical character flow in JFM 2.1 are changed to horizontal character flow in FrameMaker 5.5.
