IP license restriction warning after placing license.properties into runtime/lib directory

Issue

An IP license restriction may go into effect even with a valid serial number entered in the ColdFusion Administrator. This sometimes occurs when a user is trying to resolve the warning in the coldfusion-out.log file:

warning Unable to open C:\CFusionMX7\runtime/lib/license.properties

Reason

The typical reason for this occurring is that a license.properties file has mistakenly been placed in the /runtime/lib directory in a ColdFusion standalone installation (not a multi-server installation on JRun).

There is usually a warning in the coldfusion-out.log that says "warning Unable to open C:\CFusionMX7\runtime/lib/license.properties." This warning should be ignored. This license warning is for JRun only. It is an artifact from the underlying JRun application server that is currently not being suppressed. In a ColdFusion standalone installation, the JRun license is not required. The licensing is handled by ColdFusion later on in the startup sequence.

However, administrators sometimes try to resolve the warning by copying the license.properties file to the directory where JRun is looking for it (\runtime\lib\). Copying the license.properties file here will cause the IP restriction to go into effect. You should have no license.properties in the runtime\lib directory despite what the warning seems to imply.

Solution

To resolve this issue, remove the license.properties file from the cf_root\runtime\lib directory and restart the ColdFusion server.
