Silent installation and configurations of Shockwave playerProducts affected
Introduction
This TechNote contains information on configuring the installation of Shockwave Player. This TechNote contains information on the "silent" installation of the Windows licensed player.
Note: Before reading the following, please be sure to visit the Shockwave Player Support FAQ.
Is there a list of command line switches for the Shockwave Player installer?
A: The Windows EXE and MSI Shockwave Player licensed installers offer a command line option for enabling silent installs, which perform the installation without displaying any dialog windows.
- For the EXE (Windows, all supported browsers), use the /S option on the command line:
C:\>sw_lic_full_installer.EXE /S - For the MSI (Windows, Internet Explorer only), use the /qn option on the command line:
C:\>msiexec sw_lic_full_installer.MSI /qn
Is there a way to run the Shockwave Player installer "silently"?
A: The Windows EXE and MSI Shockwave Player licensed installers offer a command line option for enabling silent installs, which perform the installation without displaying any dialog windows.

If Shockwave Player is licensed for an intranet, will the player always try to use the notification service?
A: By default, the update notification service is turned on and Shockwave Player periodically attempts to communicate with Adobe's server to determine if there is a new version of the player. With the v10.1 release, the corporate and fixed-media free license installers will no longer include user registration dialogs or the redirect to www.shockwave.com. Users may turn the service off by changing the settings in Shockwave Player Properties menu which can be accessed by right-clicking on Shockwave content
When updates are available, the update notification service will prompt the user with a "Would you like to update Shockwave Player" dialog only if ALL of the following conditions are met:
- The user is playing Shockwave content inside a Web browser.
- The Shockwave content (DCR file) resides on a Web/intranet address, and is not local on the machine. In other words, the URL must look something like "http://myserver.somelocation.com/myfile.dcr", rather than "file:///C:\somefile.dcr".
- The machine is connected to the Internet.
- Shockwave Player is able to communicate with the Adobe server. If it is unable to for any reason, it will fail silently and the user will never see the "Would you like to update Shockwave Player" dialog. In this situation the update will not occur.
- There is a new version of Shockwave Player available.
- The user has the Auto Update or Update Notification option selected.
Note: If any one of these conditions is not met, the user will not see an update prompt at any time.
Can Shockwave Player be configured so that update notification service points to an intranet address instead of Adobe for the update?
A: No. Adobe does not currently provide the option to reconfigure the update notification service under the terms of this license.
If the machine is not currently connected to the Internet and it encounters the need to install Shockwave Player, will the machine try to establish a dial-in connection?
A: No. Shockwave Player will never initiate the opening of a connection to the Internet for an installation.
Is it possible to change the series of windows in the installation process?
A: No. Under the terms of the license agreement for the players, changes cannot be made to the installer.
If users on an intranet encounter Shockwave content for the first time and they do not have Shockwave Player installed, how can they be directed to the licensed installer on my intranet instead of Adobe's Shockwave Player installation URL?
A: You will need to change the codebase URL in the Object tag to reference the file on your server. Replace the URL, highlighted below, with the appropriate URL on your server.
<object codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/director/sw.cab#version=10,1,0,11" ID=linkedcasttest width=500 height=330><param name=src value="linkedcasttest.dcr"><param name=swRemote value="swSaveEnabled='true' swVolume='true' swRestart='true' swPausePlay='true' swFastForward='true' swContextMenu='true' "><param name=swStretchStyle value=none><PARAM NAME=bgColor VALUE=#FFFFFF><embed href="/support/director/ts/documents/linkedcasttest.dcr" bgColor=#FFFFFF width=500 height=330 swRemote="swSaveEnabled='true' swVolume='true' swRestart='true' swPausePlay='true' swFastForward='true' swContextMenu='true' " swStretchStyle=none type="application/x-director" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/"></embed>
