Dreamweaver 4 crashes on Contribute 2 sites
Issue
Dreamweaver 4 crashes whenever it connects to a site that has recently been accessed by Contribute 2.0, 2.01 (Windows) and Dreamweaver MX 2004.
Reason
Contribute 2 and Dreamweaver MX 2004 design notes on remote server or local site folder are not compatible with Dreamweaver 4. Dreamweaver 4 tries to read these files and crashes when it cannot.
Note: This will not happening with Contribute 1.0 sites.
Solution
The workaround is to delete existing design notes for all sites involved, and to disable design notes in Dreamweaver 4.
Deleting design notes
- Find the local root folder on the local hard drive. The local root folder is the local copy of the site designated at the time the site is set up in Dreamweaver.
- Locate the design notes folder which will be named_notes.
- Delete the _notes folder.
- Repeat this for each site that Dreamweaver and Contribute will be connecting to.
Disabling design notes in Dreamweaver 4:
- Choose Site > Define Sites.
- In the Define Sites dialog box, select the site and click Edit.
- In the Site Definition dialog box, click Design Notes.
- Deselect Maintain Design Notes.
Deselecting this option disables the Design Notes capability. If you deselect this option and then click Clean Up, all local Design Notes files for your site are deleted. - Click OK.
A dialog box appears, asking if you would like to delete existing Design Notes files. Click Yes to delete such files, orNo to leave them in place.
If the issue persists, also disable the dependants with the steps below.
Disabling dependants in Dreamweaver 4
- Go to Edit> Preferences> Site
- Uncheck both boxes next to "Dependant Files" which are "Prompt on Get/Check Out" and "Prompt on Put/Check In".
Note that there is no way to disable design notes in Contribute, so they will have to be disabled in Dreamweaver 4.
If the suggested workaround does not work , please post your results in our Bug Report Form.
