Known issues with Macintosh OS X v10.4 "Tiger"
topic update: April 29, 2005
Macromedia and Apple are working together to ensure compatibility between Macromedia products and Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger". Before choosing to install Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger", users should review the following known issues to determine if they are relevant to their workflow. Macromedia and Apple are working together on these issues:
- The triangle that represents a submenu in the Commands menuis not displaying. Other menus are displaying properly.
- When selecting the Chinese text converter from Services, Fireworks will crash.
Note: Also refer to Macromedia compatibility with Apple Macintosh OS X v 10.4 (Tiger) (TechNote d2410320) for information about compatibility considerations affectingmultiple Macromedia products.
Product activation issue after installing the Flash MX 2004 7.2 Updater (Windows only)
topic update: July 30, 2004
Issue
Some Windows users may experience problems with product activation after installing the Flash 7.2 updater.
Solution
After installing the Flash 7.2 updater, users may find other Macromedia products require reactivation. Further reactivations are required each time the application is launched. Ultimately, activation will fail after the product has been reactivated several times. This issue is addressed in the ServiceNote Reactivation failure after upgrading to Flash 7.2 (ServiceNote 19468).
Wacom tablets and stylus pens not working as expected with Macintosh OS X
topic update: July 29, 2004
Issue
Users have reported some issues with various Wacom tablets and stylus pens. There are two main issues:
- Wacom Intuos 2 tablet and stylus pen: Selections and dragging options do not work as expected, and the selections are all broken up. This is not a problem for the original Wacom Intuos. These two Wacom tablets use the same driver for Macintosh OS X.
- Wacom Intuos 1, 2, Graphire tablet and stylus pen: Guides cannot be clicked and dragged from the ruler using the stylus.
Solution
Uninstall the current Wacom driver, and reinstall the driver that is included on the CD with the Wacom tablet.
Tooltips do not display on Windows 98 SE
topic update: May 10, 2004
Issue
When a user hovers the pointer over the Tools Panel while on a Windows 98 SE system, they may notice that the tooltips do not display. These are the tooltips that would for example say, "Pen tool (P)" when over the Pen tool. This displays the one button keyboard shortcut or a description of a feature in the user interface. Users can still use the keyboard shortcut, yet the descriptive tooltips will not show.
Solution
There is no known workaround for this issue. The Fireworks engineering team is aware of the issue.
Can not edit grouped bitmaps with Paint Bucket tool
topic update: April 23, 2004
Issue
Grouping several bitmaps, will cause the Paint Bucket to no longer edit the colors in the different bitmaps. Users should be able to edit the bitmaps when they are grouped or not.
Solution
The known workaround is to ungroup the bitmaps to edit their colors separately. The Fireworks engineering team is aware of the issue.
Transformed objects will not resize as expected with the Properties panel
topic update: April 9, 2004
Issue
Objects that are Transformed with a rotation will cause the Info and Properties panels to react strange when adjusting the width and height. The transformed object will change size but will not match what was entered into the text field. For example, attempting to change the width will not change the value entered, yet value of the height property will change.
Solution
The known workaround is to use Transform > Numeric Transform, which will make the correct adjustments. The Fireworks engineering team is aware of the issue and is reviewing possible solutions.
Unicode issue with text input on Mac OS X
topic update: March 1, 2004
Issue
Languages that input unicode characters such as Hebrew, Turkish, Persian, Romanian, etc., will not display correctly in Fireworks MX 2004 version 7.0.2 on Mac OS X 10.2.x (Jaguar) for text input. In addition, some unicode fonts will not display correctly in Mac OS X 10.3.x.
Reason
Fireworks uses QuickDraw to render text, therefore unicode fonts that rely on ATSUI Quartz to render the characters will not display as expected. The other unicode fonts, such as TrueType UNICODE, are not supported by Fireworks.
Solution
Unicode fonts that use QuickDraw to render on the system are able to input text on Macintosh OS X 10.3.x (Panther) without problems, but require that customers install the Fireworks MX 2004, version 7.0.2 update.
Note: Customers who use Fireworks MX 2004 versions 7.0 and 7.0.1 will be unable to input unicode characters on any version of Mac OS X.

topic update: October 16, 2003
Solution
The tutorial files have been updated and are now included in the archive files (ZIP or SIT) on our website. Download the updated tutorials from the Fireworks MX 2004 Documentation page.
Note: You will need an unpacking utility such as WinZip (Windows) or StuffIt (Macintosh) to unpack the files.
Original Issue
Some of the tutorial PDFs instruct users to copy the Tutorials folder that can be found in Program Files/Macromedia/Fireworks. This folder is no longer included with the installer.

topic update: November 05, 2003
Issue
Some users are reporting that Fireworks MX 2004 will not launch after upgrading to Macintosh OS X version 10.2.8 or to version 10.3 (also known as Panther). These issues are specific to users who upgraded using either the "Archive and Install" or the "Erase and Install" features. This issue has frequently been described as the application icon bounces on the dock, but the application doesn't launch.
Solution
This issue and the solution are described in Some applications won't run after upgrading to Macintosh OS X version 10.2.8 or to Panther (version 10.3) (ServiceNote 18933).
Fireworks continually asks for a serial number when launched
topic update: November 07, 2003
Issue
This issue is most evident in volume licensing environments. Each end user is prompted to enter a serial number when launching Fireworks, even though a user with administrator privileges has already entered a serial number for the application.
Solution
This issue and the solution are described in Each user is prompted for serial number even though the product has been serialized (ServiceNote 19004).
Windows keyboard shortcut sets for Photoshop are not selectable
topic update: December 26, 2003
Issue
When editing the keyboard shortcut sets, Windows users may note that Photoshop is not selectable.
Reason
Testing has shown that Fireworks is not reading and/or writing to the dynamic commands section of the keyboard shortcut XML file. This is why you can not select or edit this set. This is not an issue for the Macintosh version.
Solution
The Fireworks engineering team is aware of the issue and is reviewing possible solutions.

Resizing the width of a slice causes Fireworks on the Macintosh to freeze
topic update: March 1, 2004
Issue
When resizing a slice to be narrow, for example about 20 pixels or less, either by dragging or typing in a new width in the Property inspector, Fireworks will freeze on a Mac OS X system.
Solution
This issue has been resolved in the Fireworks MX 2004, version 7.0.2 update.
Slow performance with Fireworks MX 2004
topic update: March 1, 2004
Issue
Some users are reporting that Fireworks MX 2004 performs typical operations slowly.
Solution
These reports are not replicable by Technical Support, so we ask that users perform the following steps to make sure the issue is not system-specific.
- Verify that your computer meets the System Requirements
- Check for any available updates for your operating system. On Macintosh, go to System Preferences > System Software Update (see above for information about 10.3.2.). For Windows, check the Microsoft web site for any available updates.
- Close any other programs that may be running and check the performance.
Note: Using Macintosh OS X 10.3.x (Panther) increases performance over Macintosh OS X 10.2.x (Jaguar) with Fireworks. This is not the full list of troubleshooting options available for Macintosh users. For more troubleshooting information, see General Macintosh troubleshooting (TechNote 3500).
