ColdFusion MX 6.1: Installer quits after choosing the language optionProducts affected

After selecting the language option and clicking "OK" during the Macromedia ColdFusion MX 6.1 installation, the installer can quit unexpectedly without error. Or, in some situations, the following error may be seen:

Warning: Administrative Rights: The installer must be run by a user having administrative privileges on this machine. Installation cannot continue because the current user doesn't have sufficient privileges.

This TechNote will cover several reasons that can cause this scenario.

Windows TEMP environment variable

This behavior can occur if the Windows "TEMP" environment variable is:

  • Set to a directory or path name that contains spaces.
  • Set to a directory or path name that contains high ascii characters.
  • Not set (defaults to the "Documents and Settings" directory which contains spaces).

Workaround:

Set the Windows "TEMP" environment variable to a directory with a path that does not contain spaces or high ascii characters. It should be set as both a System variable and a User variable. Once the installation of ColdFusion has completed, the variables can be reset to their original values.

Note: For information on setting environment variables, please refer to your operating systems documentation.

NVidia video driver

InstallAnywhere, which is used for the installation of ColdFusion MX 6.1, uses a bundled JDK 1.3.1_04 that has problems with older NVIDIA drivers. The install goes through the extraction phase and then aborts with a hotspot error:

An unexpected exception has been detected in native code outside the VM. Unexpected Signal : EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION occurred at PC=0x695c9300 Function name=(N/A) Library=C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvoglnt.dll

nvoglnt.dll is the NVIDIA driver file.

Workaround:

Upgrade the NVIDIA drivers at www.nvidia.com/.
